My wife is at it again. My neice mentioned that she would like to find a nice 2002 to use as her daily driver in L.A. So my wife starts searching the WEB and finds a 1973 3.0CS (which is the car we were really looking for before we discovered how addictive 2002s are.) They are an beautiful design.

Now my wife is thinking about selling her 1995 VW Golf and buying the CS. So what should we be looking at? Do you know of any common problem areas? Rust? Motor problems?

I'm starting to get to many projects......

1975 2002 automatic

1974 2002 4-speed

performance and luxury.

BUT:

There is no such thing as a rust free coupe'. It was a no-delete option from the factory. The car will have rust and it will be very expesive to fix

Body parts are !#&&! expensive. Figure 10 to 100 times more than for an 02

For a garage queen, and if you live where it rarely rains, you drive it on weekends and are willing to open up your checkbook, Absolutely.

For a driver, absolutely not.

Hmmmm - ...how many 02's are rust free? Coupes have rust issues just like 02's but these issues are well documented and there are many things you can do to protect the vulnerable areas and turn these into daily drivers if you want. Body parts are not 10 - 100 times more expensive... Some are more money, others are similar to 02's - overall a bit higher. A few bits are outrageous, but a lot of those parts aren't necessary (like the toolbox under the trunk lid). I have spent more money making my street 02 a daily driver than I have my coupe. Mainly because I started from a shell with the 02 and the coupe is an unmolested low mileage car.

Research the E9's on E9coupe.com. If you need more room and want a bit more luxury, the E9 is a great car. If you can live with the size of an 02 for a daily driver, it will probably be cheaper to drive in the long run.

Cheers,

Man that thing is bad ass! I guess I'm just a sucker for fender flares.

Coupes can be hard to get body and trim parts for right? Weren't they a little more year spacific than the o2? Chasis flex i think is a problem too. Motor is just like the M10 with two more cylinders (M30). They can have head cracking issues, but I would think that if it was going to crack it would have already done that years ago.
