im really attracted to 2002's and would like to pick up a daily driver in good shape. Since I am not a mechanic in the slightest, do most BMW mechanics service 02's? And, are parts hard to come by? expensive? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nate in Los Angeles

not all mechanics will touch older cars, but there are a few very trusted people in LA area who will gladly hep you. Some of the cars go for a lot of money and there are always bargains if you are not in a hurry. You can always ask to get the car inspected by a mechanic before you purchase it. If the seller will not let you, stay away from that car and the seller.

Where in LA are you?

is Jack Fahuna far from you?

thanks for your reply Steve. Other than this site, do you know of any other 2002 for sale listings i could find on the net or elsewhere? I am in Westchester near LAX and it looks like Jack is over in the valley. Not too far. BTW, how are they on gas?

i bought my 72 2002 which is my daily driver now from a shop near my house. its in eagle rock, i dont know if u know where that is, its between glendale and pasadena. its called "The M Shop", they have a 2002 expert who works only on 2002's and CS's. his name is Mike Brown. I bought a customer's car. he's really good and is upfront with you. go check him out, he has customers wanting to sell their cars every now and then, and he knows the histories of these cars pretty well.

If Long Beach is a better drive for you I like German Auto Parts and Service 514 E. Pacific Coast Highway. I've been going to them for about 20 years. David Jones bought the business from Taisto Liski after working for him for about 25 years.

im really attracted to 2002's and would like to pick up a daily driver =

that's nice

in good shape. = that would be very expensive

Since I am not a mechanic in the slightest =that's very bad

for a OLD bmw - you must have some mechanical aptitude,

tools, time, money, a place to work

do most BMW mechanics service 02's? =no , only a few in the hot beds

of the country where a lot of collector cars live, in dry non-rust belt areas,

and labor rates will run from $50 to $110 per hour - BUT the good thing is no problem buying 90+% of the parts new.

And, are parts hard to come by? expensive? Any help would be appreciated. = see above

better for you to look for a BMW E30, or E36 model.

as for not being a mechanic its not too late to learn!!!

I'd spent most of my life with beaters and then a long long stretch overseas with no car. When I got back in country I made a resolution to become at least passable as a mechanic -- and to finally get a 2002 which I'd always loved.

So some years later I can tell you its been a great hobby and I"ve learned a lot. If you have time and interest the 2002s are great learning cars as they're not clogged up with a lot of modern computers and crap.

So even if you aren't a mechanic don't let that stop you from slowly turning into one -- its a very very usefull skill!

-- after working on 2002s for a few years I actually had the balls to replace the 22RE in my toyota pickup (something I'd never have imagined possible a few years before)

SO GO FOR IT!
