Car is fine forward of the diff. (not driveshaft). Never messed with rear stuff incl. driveline. Just returned from a winter weekend drive to hear clicking noise as if one of the shoe springs let go. Any thoughts otherwise? I can't really get into things for another two weeks and am hoping all is safe to drive????

PLEASE JACK UP THE REAR OF THE CAR BEFORE DRIVING ANYWHERE ELSE!!

GRAB THE WHEEL AT 12 AND 6 O-Clock and no wiggling should be felt

make sure the wheels turn freely with no scrapping noises or resistance

try wiggling also holding at 3 and 9 O-Clock

while rotating the wheels - listen for any noise from the axle joints inside the rubber boots - look at the boots for tears or grease loss.

A brake shoe spriing could have come loose - remove the rear tires and drums and inspect for broken /dislodged bits

do not just drive with your radio turned loUDER - diagnose

the noise before a wheel passes you down the road - or worse

do you have hub caps on the wheel? Take the hub cap off and see if the grease/resivoir cap thingy is floating around between the wheel and the hub cap.

My bet is a worn axle spline. If it is repace both spline parts male and female. A temporary repair is to use locrite thread repair on the splines.

If it sounds/feels like you have a midgit in the trunk, the castle nut is probably loose. I could also make a "rubbery" scraping noise.
