Now, I know we all affectionately call the S14 engine in a 2002 an ///M2. Which is pretty neat you can do that to a 2002. =]

However, did BMW Motorsport ever tune a 2002? Their heritage comes from before the time of the 2002 (the 1800 Ti/Sa). Yet my digging around shows that they were more into racing the 3.0CSL. (Yes, the Turbo does display the distinctive ///M colors.) and were truely born with the release of the M535i to the general buying public.

What parts on/for a 2002 would make a 2002 an era specific true to the ///M tradition ///M 2002? What would ///M have done to the 2002? What carbs? What compression ratio? What pistons? A radically different engine (2.5L 4 cyl or 3.0L 4 cyl)? Etc... Would they have only touched the Tii and ignored the 2002?

(I bought some new tires for my Z yesterday and am still feeling the after effects of that purchase...) ;-] hehe.

Remember, era specific are your only restraints. Discuss.

In the summer of 1975 I went to BMW Motorsport and bought my Turbo fenders and spoilers, as that's who sold them at that time (200 bucks for the set). The stripe kit was sold by the dealer in Munich, Georg Schorschmeier (sp?). As far as road-racing goes with an '02, BMW Motorsport didn't do anything then that I'm aware of, but I'm not sure if the rally '02s back then were part of BMW Motorsport, but they did run in the BMW Motorsport colors in 1973 as there was a factory Rally effort, so some Rally parts were probably sold then by BMW Motorsport. The Motorsport HQ/building was new in 1975 and I don't think they were treated separately before that time.

The Motorsport division did not really start before the 3.0 CSL heydays. So, whatever happened before cannot be counted. But BMW did have a racing department that build the 2002TiK to fight against the Porsche domination. And the mighty 2002TiK did succeed and won the ETCC in 1969.

the book: Unbeateable BMW - Jeremy Walton, and it seems like BMW direct involvement with racing the 2002 was rather insignificant, more emphasis was placed on the 1800's, turbos and CSL during those years, not even tii's either. The book isn't really well written or organized logically, it is more like a quilt with chapters not linked or moving smoothly through the years, maybe it reflects the nature of those racing years...

The ///M cars with their distinctive badges began in 1978 with the M1. Remember the 1979 ProCar Series???

That's a couple years too late for the 2002 model to benefit from factory involvement. That's why there are those "flying toolshed" 320i turbo models driven by David 'obbs et. al.
