Ok, soo after having a couple nice pleasant trouble free days cruising locally for no more than a few miles at a time, I drove a few extra miles and my black beauty started overheating. I turned the rotor leaner hoping it was just running too hot from too rich a mixture? Well, it stopped overheating, but soon after went back to it's bad habbit of stalling.. When I got home, I tried adjusting the timing little by little with hopes of getting a better result.. Bottom line is it kept getting rougher and rougher at idle, and when I reved it I heard a distinct metalic buzz.. which this morning I believe turned into a clack clack clack... Sooo I'm guessing this head is done.

So question number 1, can I pull this head with my own two hands? Last head I pulled I used an engine hoist, just cuz I had it.

question 2 what's the best manual I can buy for a 76 02 with a 32/36 weber on it?

question 3 Just in case I can't get a manual what is the order of loosening for the head assuming I am on the passenger side and pretending this is the head XXXXXX

XXXXXX

not sure how many bolts there actually are ;)

question 4... WHO"S GOT A REBUILT HEAD!

or...how much will it cost to rebuild this one...or...what the hella should I do here? I would love to get a cheap head, but don't wanna mess with anything questionable, I don't expect this to be the last thing to go wrong with my 02, but I hope to insure this problem doesn't come back anytime soon.

It looks pretty clear cut how to remove the head... remove carbs..manifold, water pump.. what else??

questions questions...i know.. but ya know I'm sure some of you know how I'm feelin right now. This is my only means of transportation, and I would like to have it up and running in less than 3 weeks...less than 2 really...but I'm trying to be really-istic.

also which heads will fit and work? I have an electric and manual fuel pump currently, and though i would prefer to go to just the manual.. i dunno.. will a 318i/320i head work?

Your head might be good, do a compression check and if good adjust the valves. Try to isolate the noise.

1. Yes

2. Haynes, Chilton

3.Removal does not matter but start at the ends and work in.

Install does matter.

4. I would have the head checked for problems before getting a new one.

If you have flat top pistons many heads will work, E12, 121, E12.

Defiantly check the compression b4 you start tearing into it. A few years ago I bought an 87 Nissan P/U from my neighbor with a blown engine for $100, I figured even if the engine was totally shot, I could rebuild it for around 500 and still have a beater to drive around in Alaska.

I checked the compression and had 190, 80, 30,30. Hmmm, sounds pretty shot. Took the head off, the gasket was completely blown through between 3 and 4 and the # 2 exhaust valve was sticking because it was gummed up. Cleaned the valve, new gasket and it turned out to be one of the best running vehicles I've ever had.....

Another thing you can do is buy or make one of these doodads, for checking your valves, just take an airhose fitting and knock the guts out of a sparkplug and weld them together. Make sure that the piston your checking is at TDC and shoot about 10psi into the cylinder. Listen at the carb and exhaust for escapeing air to find the bad valve.

a local mechanic checked the pressure, and said it was at 85 per cylinder.. I am guessing he wasn't lying since he checked it for free. I will probibally check the valve clearance and take off the head in the next 48 hours.

Hey I wasn't trying to be rude, I just don't have alot of cash. If this head can be had cheap let me know, also what cam is in it?

It is most likely a bare cast head without anything installed in it. You would still need to build it up with your parts, replacing any of your parts (valves, cam, rockers, etc.) that are worn out, of course.
