Hey folks,

Saw a 72-73 2002 on the side of the road. Not driven in 4 years, not started in one year. Burgundy, black interior. It definitiely needs some work on the paint and especially the interior (mold, missing parts). owner asking $400 but will take $300 cash. It looks solid, although there is evidence of a welded in patch on the floor near the pedals, and the brake pedal is stuck down. Motor supposedly ran fine last year, has a new weber carb.

I thnik it's a good deal and am willing to work on it to make it a nice weekend driver. I can do bodywork/paint/motor/ about anything. Have all the tools and a workshop.

Can anybody give me ideas about where to prod around to look for rust/corrosion problems that woudl be a deal breaker? Also are parts (bumpers, interior bits, door seals, etc) readily available?

TIA. If i buy this little beauty I look forward to becoming a regular here.

Yeah there are a few areas that you should look. First the frame rails under the car particularly right below the brake master cylinder, second the rear strut suports in the trunk also check the wheel well for rust. There are a ton other places to look but these are the majors anything else can be repaired fairly easy. You should go out and get the book. The BMW 2002 by Mike Macartney.

to look for" category. Also get a copy of Mac Cartney's 2002 Restoration book. Even better, take an experienced 2002 person with you to look at the car and teach you the ropes.

If the body's sound--and especially if it runs, that's a good price for a project car. 72's and 73's are generally acknowledged to be the best years for an '02...but some board members might disagree...I'm prejudiced 'cause I have a 73...

if you want to do the work that sounds like a pretty good deal. I mean you could get a hundred or more just for the carb, so time and trouble are the real investment in this case I reckon.

Go for it!!

for 300-400 it will be a good deal if the sell FIRST

gets the car running, and drivable, stopping, steering so you can then road test it .
