front left rattle

Hi, what is this noise?! It has been there since I bought the car, it it sounds and feels like it's coming just slightly from the left of the steering wheel.. It sounds like a loose wobble/rattle it even nearly sounds like it's in/under the dash rather than under the car or god forbid in the tranny. fyi I recently replaces tie rods, center link and right ball joint, left ball joint was said to be ok by mechanic who checked them out. I know it's hard to say without hearing it, but maybe some of you have had simular sounds you can throw out there, so I can start narrowing it down.

Thanks, Todd btw I think my compression is fine for any wondering..thanks for the help on that!

Check the LF strut bearing.

It may be loose or worn.

If the rubber surround is cracked and/or dry, replace it before it decides to 'let go' and poke a hole in your hood.

Also check the front wheel bearings. Grab the tire at the 12 o'clock position with both hands and give it a violent shake in and out. If they are loose, you will hear and feel the clunking. Easy to tighten up, but figure out how old they are first as they may be due for replacement.

Is the steering firm? guibo on the steering OK, they can let go and have rattles. Also look for an angry snake. Beaner7102

Delia this is a common myth. Unless the strut tower (chassis) itself failed, there is no way the strut could come through the mount and poke a hole in the hood. the spring hat wont fit!! MAYBE a coillover could shoot through.... ;)

and for the original poster, you say its under the dash, eh? can you feel the rattle through the pedals/ wheel, floor,or the dash itself (put your hand on it!) is it a HEARING rattle (aka something light) or a FEELING rattle (aka something heavy)? :)

a little of both maybe, I removed the panel under the steering colum last week to see if i could feel it.. but it's really been a bugger to pin down.. it sometimes seems to come on during steering, but always comes on around 2500 rpm's and then goes away..usually....

However I have bigger problems now, as it looks like my head is indeed bad.. i will be posting on that right now.
