Yesterday I had a lengthy conversation with a well known tuner about their 5-speed conversion.

Just curious, he told me they use the E30-325i clutch/throwout with a "composite" slave cylinder. He said this slave elminates the need to reshape the tranny tunnel.

He would not give me the source for the part. But I do know that newer BMWs use various composite parts (like the water pump in my M3 is composite).

Anyone have any guesses or comments regarding this setup?

i thought it was odd but figured it was a new material. i got my 5 speed conversion from aardvark and it came with it. dave never told me about not needing to mess with the tunnel. i had my entire drivetrain in and things are tight even after i modded the tunnel (with bashing). is dave who you were speaking with?? this composite slave looks identical to a standard unit except for the material. its no smaller

No it was not Dave, it was Metric Mechanic.

Curious because he claimed it was in fact smaller.

Do you know if its the standard 320i one or from something else?

I HONESTLY DONT. would a picture help>??? it looks like a normal slave to me.

The slave in my 84 533i is composite. Weird to pick it up, thinking it will have some weight, and then noting that it's feather light.

The E28 part covers E12, E21, E24, E28, and E30. Part number is 21 52 1 116 300.

Is it any smaller than the 320i one? Or is is simply the same size... but lighter...

Composite meant it was made out of lightweight materials. He did not mean two different parts put together as one.

I'd bet it was this one.

It appears the same as my 323i unit, but I've not seen a 320i unit in a LONG time. I'm sure it's the same one.

if it's plastic it won't rust and pit internally from contaminated brake fluid. since that's the primary cause of cylinder failure (leakage) and given the difficulty of changing one on an '02 5 speed conversion, it would seem the composite slave cyl would be a good thing to have...

That was one of metric's points. He said it is a lot better resisting corrosion which is a good thing.
