I was playing around with building a short shifter for my 02..

here's some pics. :) It feels good , but I actually have to lengthen the bottom part of the linkage by just a little bit.

New cheapo arc welder works like a charm though :)

Hey C.D. That's the site that gave me the idea. :) hehe. When I put my 320 5-speed in i'll probably use a Z3 2.4 (i think it is, i have it written down) Shifter.

I think the answer you'll find is No. When you buy a short shift kit, it not only lowers the height of the shifter, but tightens the throw between the gear changes by changing the shift LINKAGE.

If you lower just the top, won't you end up with sloppy shifting on a shorter lever, making actually a more difficult job to select gears?

Just my $.02

I was thinking that there must be some short of ratio for modification of the shift lever. Shorten the top by 2 and lengthen the bottom by 1. Something like that. I have driven o2s with too tight of a shifter and driven them with too short of a lever. Gotta be somewhere in the middle. I like the Brass colored one in that picture of shifters.

...and Mr. Randy Forbes will make it for ya. He took over for Ron Stygar. Erandyforbes@aol.com http://www.rfdm.com/Randy/BMW/pics/projects/SS%20Project/

I have one in my M Coupe. Its not a kit that improves leverage or anything like that, but I don't think there is a kit out there that effectively accomplishes that. It is nice to have the shorter throws and with redline in my tranny, I don't notice it any notchier than before. I'm sure you'll see that he specializes in newer e36 and e36/7/8 applications, but he's an intelligent guy and I'm sure he'll be able to figure out what lengths would best suit us 2002 guys.
