The stronger ones are the 80-83 with the three part case. 84 - on was a two part case. There were no 5 speeds in 79. G

On the e21 320i, the 80-81-82 were three parts but the 1983 was 2 parts. There was no e21 in 1984, it was the e30 318 with a tranny without the mechanical pick-up for the speedo.

Brake harder. Go faster.

Lee is right, the 2 piece was only for the 83 model year. Its gets confusing though because no E21s were actually made in 83, all 83 models were made in about 4 months at the end of 82.

I hear alot about the 2 piece being weaker than the 3 piece, but has anyone ever broken a 2 piece transmission? I would be incredibly surprised if they have, so far its all been idle speculation in my experience.

Here is some info from the "way-back-machine" around 1987.

Information is from the Metric Mechanic catalog, and most likely was gathered by Jim Blanton who still rebuilds gearboxes/diffs.

I will paraphrase here some....

Getrag 240s have aluminum shift forks (vs brass in the 245s) that would tend to break. Vague and/or difficult shifting and popping out of gear are also symptoms of a bent shifter fork.

Also many '83 240's would get locked in reverse due to manufacturing defects in the selector shaft or the reverse shaft pivot pin moving out of place.
