Looking down at the distributor, with the cap removed & the rotor installed, there is a thin line notch on the top edge of the distributor body that the rotor will point to to fire plug #1. To confirm you are looking at the right notch mark, you can put the car in 3rd or 4th gear & roll it forward until the rotor lines up with the notch. Confirmation that you've got the right marks aligned comes from looking at the front pulley (or flywheel) timing marks, and you should be somewhere near (or just before) the TDC marks.

Back to the fine line notch on the distributor -- note which plug wire tower on the cap lines up close to it when the cap is fitted. That's number 1, and the rest follow anti-clockwise around the cap in the firing order 1-3-4-2 when viewed from the top in the installed position.

If you forget the firing order, BMW cast the number sequence onto the top of the valve cover where it's easy to spot.
