Do windshields go bad?

Im not sure if you guys can answer this but its worth a shot. So the problem is usually in the morning. The windshield is covered with water and condensation. This is understandable but when I either squegee it off or try to wipe it off with rags the moisture doesnt seem to leave. No matter how much I rub the glass it still has moisture. So as I back down my driveway, the window fogs. It only goes away when it is parked in the sun for a few minutes. Is this the windshields fault? None of my other cars have this problem.

Thanks in advance

Possible it has oil on it. Try a good glass cleaner or even a fine jewelers paste. The paste works for fine scratches but it might work for oil also.

hmm

I know my tii windshield is starting to cloud up where the glass seems to be separating .. isn't there a layer of plastic between the two glass layers?

Is it possible that you've got moisture between the layers and as it warms up it goes away??

just a guess

That is a resonable assumption. So if I were to change the windshield do you guys know how much it will run me with install?

That's pretty common behaviour in a high humidity salt water kind of area sometimes it's damned hard to get a clean window...

Also, you may want to uber-clean it. I"m not sure which products are best, but a dousing of windex taken off with newspaper instead of paper towels seems to work. Then if you've got a badly scratched or chipped window, there are "glass restorer" products that could work.

I think Griot's garage offers a glass polish/restorer.

Once you get it good, clean again, and hit with a coat of rainex.

A word of caution about Rain-X. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS on the bottle, *EXACTLY*, or you may get bad results!

Finally empty your squirter bottle, wash out good with dish soap, and re-load. I remember those monkey lube places got oil in my squirter bottle on one car, what a PITA, I don't let them fill any more!

It is made from very finely-ground eggshells and will remove any grease and grit on the surface while also very gently polishing the glass. Once cleaned with Bon Ami and elbow grease, the surface acts almost as if Rain-x was applied.

I think one of the few places that carries the Bon Ami original is Tru Value hardware in the US - it is very cheap, too. Sadly, I can't find it anywhere in Canada.

no disrespect intended but it's not rocket science just a grimy piece of glass & hi humidity

clean with whatever you'd clean glass with..the rest is atmospheric conditions....condensation's the results of hi humidity...when water vapor...the hi humidity contacts a cooler surface...the windshield, it forms fog...the water on your windshield

Im aware of atmospheric conditions. Like I said of course I have condensation with my other car windshields but when I wipe it off, it cleans nicely, but with the 02, all it causes me is hell. Thanks for the tips guys

Yes, laminated windshields are two layers of glass with a center plastic layer. The plastic layer oxidizes with age just like paint or any other plastic, starting from the the edges. The glass layers are not actually separating so there is no water intrusion problem. MZRJ has a surface problem. Hope he will post the solution when he finds it.

I've tried the Griots glass polish and I didn't think it worked too well. I actually saw no difference in any of the glass I polished with it. You may want to try a different product.

I have a foggy front windsheld on my car, and wondered if it could be cleared up, or If I have to find a new one. I don't think I can reconditon it, but if anyone knows of anything, I'm all ears too.

Hey guys. I bought the rain-x stuff, it worrks great..BUT that didnt solve the problem. I am seeing condensation in between the two layers of window which means i probably have a leak. When the fogging just begins it starts fromt he edge of the window. Thanks for all your suggestions. How much do windows usually run? thanks again

The new seal cost me $80.00

The new windsheald installed was about $300

General age and the fact that my car had been a daily driver it's whole life left the windhield a little sand blasted. I couldn't get it to clear up so I had it replaced. But that was before I found this forum and all these glass polishing suggestions.

The sandblast didn't have the same symptoms that you describe.
