Do you need to get a different gear that slides into the tranny where the speedo cable inserts or is there a different method?

You have to pull the cluster and send/take it to a VDO place. State authorized places are the only ones who can get the gears. It sucks and is expensive and worse yet its expensive. Aruond 200 bucks at our local place.

I had my km/h speedo completely rebuilt, and recalibrated for $110 at North Hollywood Speedometer. Worked like a charm after that. $200 is WAY too much.

Some time back there was a group buy from www.wallothnesch.com on new speedos. I bought a new 3.91 unit for my 72's 5sp conv. The dial face does not match the early instrument style as the later units have the white cross on the face. I tried pulling the needle and face of the old unit and decided I liked the white cross on the new one. It is about impossible to get the neelde off without damaging it. Well, with my level of dexterity anyway.

Grover- call '02 salvage and ask them for a speedo for an automatic. Most autos had a 3.90.

to figure out your correct speedo. You look on the back of the speedo in your cluster for the corresponding Marking, it's stamped on the back. Got this from Curt Ingraham I think:
