Hey do you know what the voltage readings should be at the coil on the positive side? I'm getting about 9 volts and I'm wondering if it should be 12???

Despite the most benevolent and evil incantations, Carnac fails to reveal the year and model of your car, which coil you have, whether you've removed the ballast resistor, what ground reference you used for your voltage measurement, whether the engine was running when you measured, and your identity .

For a stock ignition with the ignition on, engine stopped, and points closed, the voltage between the + and - terminals of the coil should be around 9 volts. This can vary by a volt or so depending on resistances in the primary wiring. Under these conditions the other 3 volts will be across the ballast resistor. You can simulate the points being closed by grounding the - terminal on the coil. During cranking the ballast resistor will be bypassed, and the voltage at the coil terminals should be about 10 volts (full battery voltage).

If you have a blue coil, your ballast resistor should be permanently bypassed, and the coil voltage should be about 12 volts in the first case above.
