i was the fortunate recipient from a generous fellow FAQer who gave me an engine block w/ bathtub pistons. i figured at the very least i could use it to familiarize myself with the bitsnpieces before i actually rebuild one of mine.

ideally, i wanted to see if i could "potentially" reuse the pistons for a 121ti head i have.

the engine no. is 1563330 which according to the FAQ reference means this was originally a 1968 BMW 1602. looking at the other FAQ reference on pistons suggest that these pistons are different than 2002 pistons.

a search of the archives did not shed light on this.

questions:

are 1602 and 2002 blocks interchangeable?

are the crankshaft interchangeable?

what about the pistons?

anything else i should know.

btw, the head was not included.

That sounds like a 1600.

1. The pistons are different size from the 2002 (84mm for 1600 vs. 89mm for 2002).

2. The piston stroke is different (71mm for 1600 vs. 80mm for 2002). The diffrenet stroke is achieved by using a different crank and piston pin to deck height. The only things in common with the 2002 are the connecting rods.

The crankshaft is different in many ways.

3. All 1600s have pretty tall baththub domes on the pistons. Due to the short stroke a fairly tall dome (5.5mm or so) is needed to achieve even a 8.6 comp ratio. The 1600ti 9.5 comp ratio pistons have even taller domes (8.6mm or so).

4. I don't know if you can bore out the 1600 block to a 2 liter. If you did, you would have a 2002 or 1802 block, depending on the pistons and crank you use (2002 and 1802s both use the 89mm bore).

5. Few people rebuild 1600s (less torque, poor parts availability due to less demand). These motors are smoother though from their bigger 2 liter cousin and much happier at high rpms due to the short stroke and lighter crank and pistons. They were extensively raced in their class in the European Touring Car Championships and were very successful.
