Ok, so I locked my trunk today and when I went to open it after unlocking it the button just pushes in as if it where locked (tab not hitting other tab to trigger release spring). I consulted the archive and came up with, I either need to drill it out or pound it out with a 2x4 and a 5 pound hammer, neither of which I'm crazy about doing.

I meddled with it going from the 6 o'clock position to the 12 o'clock position several times with the button pushed in and with it out in hopes that something would click or pop but nothing.

I've tried several things but have run out of ideas, is drilling it out my only option at this point? Are replacement OEM trunk locks still available from BMW and will it come with a key?

Thanks

I reckon your best bet is to take the car to a locksmith who deals with cars. If they can get the lock to open they will be able to take an impression of the key and then re-jig the lock so it's like new again. If this doesn't work a new lock will be the only fix. They are still available - Jaymic have them for around 25 pounds so you should be able to find it locally.

You might be able to insert a very slim slotted screwdriver or a scratch awl, where the key inserts and try to open the trunk that method, hoping to hit the mechanism that opens the trunk., worked for me a long time ago ( middle 1980's ) when the trunk lock of my Atlantik blue '74 2002 did not work, a small metal piece had fallen off.

Hi,

the lock can be caught in a position that makes it useless. try this, the lock is locked in the teeth of the key up position and all the way out, make sure that the cylinder is ALL THE WAY OUT. even put some heat and or lubricant on it to make sure. now without pushing in the lock cylinder at all put the key into the lock and turn it to the teeth of the key down position. DONT push the cylinder in while inserting the key or turning it this will make the small tab that hits the lock mechanism skip past the armature. now, remove the key and push in on the lock cylinder and while pushing, try to lean the cylinder and the part that moves to the left on the outside of the panel and sort of to the right on the inside of the trunk. i have even put a socket on the cylinder and tried to bend it to the left to get enough rotation. this should help make the end of the lock cylinder hit the armature and pop the trunk lid open.

good luck

Tried the things posted above, still no luck. I have contemplated the least damaging and inexpensive way to get into the trunk and I have decided I may go in through the Gas tank shroud. It appears to still be soft enough to exact-o a hole big enough to get a crafted tool to the mechanism and hopefully, pop the sucker open. Checking with BMW first to make sure a replacement shroud is still available. Wish me luck!

May be a few days before I actually attempt it, I'd like a new shroud in hand before I go exact-o crazy, I'll post an update.

Thanks for all the input!

Got the trunk opened!!! Yahoo!

After pricing the filler pipe ($72 from BMW!! for that particular piece of molded rubber) I decided to give the 2x4 thing a go again.

I wasn't hitting it firmly enough, so the last time I really gave it a good waaaap, and it popped open....phew.

If I went through the shroud I would have been out the $72 and still would have ended up buying a new lock. Just took some time to gather up the courage to really hit it good. Best part it didn't bend a thing.

The culprit.... The lock tab had broken away.

Now, new trunk lock time.
