i too bought the bavauto tool to install the lockstrip. even with that tool i struggled. i nearly mangled my gasket doing it. since then i've read on this board to soak it in hot water prior and use soapy water. i did neither. i dread doing the rear windshield someday...

one more thing. when i finally got done i was shy about 2 inches.

i have yet to fabricate the tool designed by a fellow FAQer consisting merely of an open loop fashioned from an old drywall saw. will try that next.

I have tried to do this alone. It's a struggle and does not work.

I use the tool, and my wife feeds the strip. I usually use dish soap (never tried the soaking) I just installed the rear windshield on my 74tii. It took us 10 minutes to install the lock strip. And I did not even use any soap.

I have heard that some people have had success installing the lockstrip on the gasket before installing the windshield in the car. I have not tried that yet.

Good luck.

its still a pain,

but the gasket could care less whether the trim's been installed, and it's a lot easier to be able to manipulate the seal out of the car...

sorry, no help here!

....you do need a tool - a closed wire loop with a roller like the one used by SAAB and BMW for this installation of the trip strip.

DO SOAK THE TRIM IN A BUCKET OF HOT WATER AND IT WILL SOFTEN

great for a quick insert. The front is harder only because of the sharper

turns in the corners . The rear one falls into the rubber in 5 min.s. Really easy - with the correct tool of course. Shop for the generic tool at a body shop paint supply store where body tools are sold.

The special tool you will need here is patience.

I did mine with out the install tool, but was able to use a variety of rounded flat blade screwdrivers and plastic spudgers. I got lucky and found the right combination. Foamy glass cleaner is a big help as well. The corners will be a royal pain.

My tip is to work for a while until your hands give out, then take a break. Come back to it when you are rested. Winter weather just makes things tougher. Warming up the windsheild seal in the sun before you install the glass will help with that part. Use a hairdryer to warm up just the spot you are working on for installing the lockstrip.
