Opinions on the ANSA Sport Muffler?

While replacing my clutch, I noticed that I have a hole in my muffler. I'm considering the ANSA sport ($110) from BAVauto and a stock ANSA or bosal replacement ($60-95). I'll replace the resonator at the same time.

I'm not looking for something that is noisy or drones, but I wouldn't mind a bit more rumble. Any opinions n the ANSA sport as far as noise, fit durability. How about bosal vs. ansa stock. My '02's a 76 center exit.

thanks,

Sam

Ansa muffler needs mods to fit on 74-76, the hanger must be cut and moved. I have one on my 75 with a header and ansa resonator and I like it a lot.

75 2002: weber, ANSA, lowered, 14" wheels, new engine, new suspension, rust free & square.

I have a 76 too, and it wasen't easy to mount. Like others have said, the hangers needed to be cut and welded, and I never got it to have a stock fit. The welds were pretty easy. Anyone with a little practice with a MIG welder should be able to do it.

The exhaust is louder than the old Ansa model (early 90s?), and you WILL hear it. Once up to speed on the highway, the exhaust note fades out, and the carbs cover up whats left of the exhaust sound. Around town, its just about loud enough for me. As the revs climb over 5000+, it makes a very intense sound. On deaccel, it can get a little annoying with its heavy rumble which can't be avoided unless the throttle is open slightly.

Just like everything with an 02, it depends on your mood. Some days I want the exhaust to be quiet and I want to hear the radio. Other days the exhaust is a ton of fun, and I want to run the car through tunnels all day. The Ansa will usually turn heads when you have your foot in it, and can be heard from inside a house while under normal acceleration. If this is your weekend car, go for it, but don't expect to tread lightly. I thought a loud exhaust would be great, but sometimes I wish it were stock. I'm an idiot thought, and need to appreciate the 02 for what it is, raw.

Keep in mind the exhaust needs time to break in. It is very loud at first, but will quiet down after a few days.

Not an Ansa, but a guy here local to me did a great job from the header back. 270.00 including a resonator and muffler. A tad bit loud for me. I am happy none the less.

Depends on the rpms you are crusing at. I'd say the Ansa is ok unless you are running a 4spd with a 3.90 or something. If you are running in the lower rpm range, you should be ok. I have a Supersprint exhaust which is no quieter than the Ansa but is better made (more expensive also) but also requires some welding. Good luck

More former BMW's than it is possible to list.

Lol thats exactly what I have, 3.90 and 4speed and I bought one :) We'll see how deaf I go.

Actually, my Ansa seems to be louder cruising around town than it is on the highwaywith a 3.90 and 4 speed. Engine load/throttle position seems to determine the noise level. The engine isn't under much load spinning at 4000 RPM on the highway. Of course, the stock exhaust would be quieter though.
