Alright guys - im sure this has been beaten to death - but here goes. I'm building what is supposed to end up as a fast street / autox / weekend car. It came with 45 DCOE's and a picked up some TI manifolds for it. After some thought, however, i came across the idea that a 318i setup may offer more power and certainly more reliability. On the contrary, i love the sound of the freakin carbs.

so, What HP can i get with the EFI? I know with DCOEs 150 isnt unreasonable. Or am I kidding myself? I plan to run a header, ansa exhaust, 292 or 304 cam, 9.5 - 10 to one compression, lightened or alum flywheel, ect ect. So, Whats the better choice for me????

This is what I have done with mine,

Bored to 2.2L

Ti head

10.5:1 compression

Forged Aluminum Pistons

Camshaft can't remeber I'll check one day.

Balanced Crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, front pulley

MSD 6A Ignition

Bosch Super Blue Coil

Tii Distributor

Vacuum advance - not full mechanical advance

Mikuni twin side draught carbs 44mm

New 3 Core Radiator

1999 Honda Civic Electric fan with shroud

Carter Fuel Pump

BMW 320i 5-Speed Transmission

Running a Tii exhaust manifold, leadind into 2inch pipe right now.

Driving it almost everyday for a year now with no issuse. Knock On Wood.

Hi Pat.

Please let me know how you came to the conclusion that the 318 L-jetronic can bring more power. Ditching the AFM is the path used by Alpha-N and MAF to get rid of this very power-robbing barn door. If power and adjustablity is what you want, keep clear of L-Jetronic. If you want power and torque but not the problems associated to DCOEs, perhaps a 38/38 (or 40/40) is a better choice.

On my 2002, I started with L-Jetronic, went for two months to DCOEs, then to programmable EFI (which I liked a LOT), then back to DCOEs because of regulations, and will go back to programmable EFI.

Pat, I voted for 318 with megasquirt. However then I read your ideas for your motor.

Anything more than a 292 in the cam department your really gonna want/need ITBs or Webbers. The reason being, with high duration cams there is more and more turbulance in the intake due to valve overlap (intake and exhaust valvs open at the same time). That being said, you might get more drivability with a 318 intake and a 292 cam. I built the motor in my volvo with a torque cam and find it very nice for autoX.

However, the motor for my 2002 is going to have:

S14 crank

Crower rods

92mm J&E pistons

Schrick 304 cam

ported head and intake

TWM ITBs

Megasquirt

For a reliable efficient street car I would recommend Megasquirt (that's what I voted)

However if it is power you are after I would go with Weber's or ITB's

Harv did you go with the 2900 series throttle bodies? I'm actually very interested in that setup.

Off hand I don't remember if they are 2900 series or not. They are 45mm TWM ITB's. They look like Webbers with fuel injectors and use Webber type intake manifolds, mine are also TWM.

Now that I have looked them up, they are 2900 series.

Here is my word of advise when picking a set of TWM TBS. As we already know, most 45 DCOES are choked most of the time to 36 or 38mm. Certain persons will go up to 40mm chokes. THis would be the equivalent of using a 40mm TWM throttle body. Only the very few of you who already have 50 DCOEs and 44 chokes will see the benefit of the 45mm TWMs. I was happy with my 45mm TWM, but bigger is not necessarely better. Next time, I will go for 40mm TWMs...

I have been wondering the same thing. A friend of mine built a Volvo 142 and he put a B23 in it with TecIII and 45mm TWM itb's We have noticed that most of the power comes in the first half of the throttle. When I had Eric build the head he said it would benifit from a set of 48DCOE if I could find them. I hope the 45's won't be too big. My friends Volvo is mild and doesn't have the flow ability of a ported BMW head with a Schrick 304.
