I'm just about finished with putting together a car for a customer. It's a converted 67 1600(Bristol) with a 2.0 engine,4.10 1600 diff (modified for limited slip) and 320i 5 speed overdrive. This thing is a real hill climber. I can pull away from all types of new cars uphill on a steep grade and in 3rd gear. There is a lot of torque at the rear wheels. In 5th it still cruises better than the stock 2002 with 4 speed and 3.64diff. The overdrive has been cut down from 18% to about 7% when compared to 3.64 diff with 5 speed. It takes off like a rocket when driving from signal to signal. I don't like the 38/38 Weber though. It has kind of that all or nothing feel and takes away a good deal of driveability at lower RPMs. This carb seems to be a fad lately. The 32/36 is a much more versatile carb with similar performance at open throttle. The 39/38 also drinks too much fuel.

will flow better (WITH some other mods) and add maybe 10-15ish hp.

It made a noticable difference at the track.

However, it's a bit on/off in traffic- for a commuter, I concour with you pref for the smaller carb.

I might be able to grab a 4.10 diff out of a 1600. How hard is it to pull? Also, what was the lsd conversion like for it? I'm thinking about using my early 69 2002 as a vintage rally crosser and the extra torque sounds good for this type of app. Do you have a hotter cam in your car with the 38/38 because I have a weber 32/36 that I like, but thought the weber 38/38 or 40/40 would be the way to go. I've heard of people converting their weber 32/36 into a double pumper where both chambers open at once. Has anyone tried this mod? Is it easy to do? Do you need extra parts? THX

I have a 3.42LS in my '76 '02 with a 5-speed overdrive, but I am interested in locating a 3.90LS for autoxing. With the combination I have in car right now, it will cruise at a 100mph at 4000rpm. Works great for long distance trips along with the extra fuel tank I built that is located between rear wheel wells to give me a total of approx 26 gals. Drove to Daytona and stopped once for fuel on the way there from San Antonio, lol.

I'd like to see pics of your extra tank jdp. I always wondered if you could slice the top off the tank and exend it upwards using sheet metal. Could probably extend it to hold an extra 3-5 Gal w/ an otherwise stock setup. Touring w/o pitstops is a good way to make serious time.

Flo, I need to run up to the lake and if I remember I will take a photo of the tank. Its approx 14 gals made out of 14 ga steel and we coated the inside w/ liquid rubber to help prevent any rust contamination. Tank has been in my car for many years. It doesn't protude past the wheel wells into main trunk area. I installed a toggle switch under dash to switch between stock and aftermarket tanks.

The limited slip conversion was daone by a local guy here in Los Angeles, Robert from RIDS. This particular diff is the longneck. I believe he combines parts from the 320i limited slip shortneck with the longneck 4.10 to make the longneck 4.10 limited slip. It works well.

There is no hot cam in this particular engine. It is stock except for the carb. I have another 2002 with a 292 and forged high comp pistons, but I ened up taking the 38/38 off tha car as well because I felt it was not as streetable. The car runs much smoother and has better control and response at lower RPMs. At full throttle it still has a lot of power. The 32/36 is a much more enjoyable carb if you drive the car on the street.

4.10 or 4.11 diffs are found on all 1600s (longneck up until 1970). If you use the 1600 longneck 4.10 or 4.11 don't worry about switching the 3 hole flange for the 4 hole style. This is permissible on the longnecks, but not on the shortnecks because the shortneck design does not allow for loosening the flange nut without having to disassemble the entire unit to replace the crush collar, otherwise it will leak. Diffs are not too difficult to remove,much easier than the tranny. However, sometimes there might be a rusty nut or bolt to contend with. It's a good idea to go to an automotive parts shop and replace the seals. You can read the size on the old seals and find them by size.

Before I wrecked her (and salvaged most of the parts), I had a `69 1600 with a 2L (32/36 DFAV, long tube header, 9.5 piano tops, port-matched E12 head), a 320i 5 spd and a RIDS-built longneck 4.11 LSD. I don't believe a better combination is out there for these cars. I took off from the light well and I've had as good 30MPG on the highway.

No complaints!

my 72 tii touring had a 345 LS I liked that gear for the Abahn and interstate. Jh Dlk2 has it now just sitting in the Garage . my son the lawyer lost the "kye".

Sounds good, I'd like to see your handy work on the tank. I have a BMW R100s motorcycle and I've seen Luftmeister aftermarket tanks for it that are rare and pretty cool period pieces. Many BMW MC riders ride long distances and the larger capacity tanks and luftmeister aux tanks are desirable.

Flo, I bought a '76 R100rs new and put about 75K on it before giving up cycling, when my child was born. I thought about purchasing the exlarge tank, a few friends of mine had them, but I never did. I can remember riding cross-country and finding myself running low at fuel at 3 or 4am and having to throw out a sleeping bag in the middle of a city park, in front of a church, alongside the road, and sleeping over until stations opened up, lol. Rode to Daytona for bikers week a couple of times, Loretta Lynn's Dude ranch one summer for BMW MC national.
