Steering wheel splines

Are the splines on a 2002 the same as E30? If not, when did they change?

The change came with the introduction of the E30. E21 had the same splines as the 2002.

A different steering wheel may fit the splines, but the wheel hub may be too close or too far from the column covers -- things like that. Do a test fit at a pull-your-part yard if you can. Splines are the same for all BMWs of the early to late 70s era.

identical to the 2002 wheel--with one exception--and some had wood rims...very pretty (but still bus wheels).

The only difference is that on the sixes, the horn contact ring is on the steering wheel and the spring loaded button is on the steering column--just the opposite from a 2002 (one of those little mysteries). However, the 6 cyl wheel is drilled for the 2002 horn contact, so all you have to do is remove the contact ring from the back of the 6 cyl wheel and install the 2002 contact.

I used one of the wood rims on my '69 for many years and it fit just fine...only reason I removed it was to fit a smaller diameter wheel...
