Alfa Romeo Giulia models from the 60s and 70s. They had coil springs and a trailing arm (to locate the axle) at the rear. The racing GTA and GTAm models were extremely successful in racing. They used something called a "sliding block" to prevent the axle from moving left and right.

Independent suspension is arguably superior though, as a movement in one wheel does not affect the opposite wheel.

But then again, all it's really doing is keeping the back end from dragging on the ground in that car.
