firewall insulation

Is the black firewall foam in the engine compartment good for anything besides promoting rust? Mine's pretty crumbly, and I'm not sure if it is worth replacing while I've got the engine out.

the insulation is suposed to be a light gray. its there to reduce the heat into the car off the engine and as sound deading materal. Here is a pic of a NEW one from BMW installed on the SC. there is some foil near the header area. None of my parts cars still have that part and most dont have the materal anymore.

but then again, it was saturated in oil. The replacement is about $50.
