If he have to shift one more shoot to go to 60mph because the gearing is lower, then his 0-60 time will go up.

Get my point?

making repairs with BMW Original Teile parts,

especially with an high stress component like this !

New Bolts, 'RED' perminent thread locking agent on threads, and correct tightening torque settings.

Someone along the way did screw (not) the pooch.

And another fine piont about using USED PARTS.

Always inspect and check for correct assembly before

using them - trust no one but yourself - again especially with a potentially deadly component as a diff - what would have been your story if you had been driving on a road at 75MPH when this failed ???

Glad no injuries - get on with the repairs.

.........................................................

that said - SIMPLE = remove the back cover which you should have done before installing it to clean it out ansd inspect for broken/worn teeth, changing the oil - all before wasting your time and energy .

(TRUST ONLY YOURSELF - AND BLAME ONLY YOURSELF)

WITH THE COVER REMOVED - ROTATE THE GEARS AND THE TEETH COUNT / RATIO IS CLEARLY STAMPED INTO THE GEARS - LOOK

No doubt about it. even had a pal come over and verify. I did find a LSD in a 82 320i at a boneyard... i suspect its a 3.64 however dammit! how do you read the letters on the bottom of the diff to tell what it is?

It kicks ass all over the pavement, but I still haven't gotten it to stop whining. Sending it back for retuning again soon.

should be 11S43 or some combo.

Devide the big number by the little one, that is your ratio. The S means limited slip. If you can't make them out, look inside, count the teeth and see it there are any clutches. If there are remnants of a big painted S on the side that is a limited slip also.
