...or IS there one? Not to crank a debate, but would

Castrol Heavy Duty 30W be a substitute?

Non-Hyphoid for gearbox, Hyphoid for differential,

right? Anyone use anything other than Redline?

I'm a daily not neccessarily track driver.

Just looking for more accessible options at the

local auto store.

TIA

Dave

Redline is good stuff, but not necessary. I ran Castrol Hypoy for years in my 232 4-speed. I wouldn't use Castrol HD 30W. You want some sort of 80w or 90w gear oil.

The main thing is to keep the transmission topped up. More trannys fail because of improper maintenance than because Redline wasn't used. Some say that Redline makes the shifts smoother, but I'm not all that convinced that it will do that to any transmission. Thick oil actually helps your synchros do their job, because they are using friction to change the speed of a spinning shaft. The thicker oil will naturally help a spinning shaft to slow down, too, just by putting drag on all the rotating parts. Reducing friction at the synchros prolongs their life, but reduces their effectiveness.
