I have a msd 6a and red coil i am going to put on the new engine. question.. i have heard petronix has problems at high rpms, and that the crane optical sensor unit is better. searched web, and forum engines and did not find direct discussion. has anyone used msd with crane? i know tep sells petronix with their high performance ignition upgrade kit. i am inclined to go with petronix. any help appreciated. thanks///

I currently have the Pertronix in my '73 Tii and it works great and has proven to have more longevity than then Crane unit I had used before. Basically the difference comes down to a Magnetic trigger in the Pertonix whereas the Crane uses an optical unit.

I run the msd 6a with red coil and pertronix in my '73 Tii. No problems at any RPM. Nice setup -- Pretty much love it.

no trouble with it yet. I have heard that the crane optical triggers are less reliable, but I don't have any evidence to back that up.

Can you use the petronix kit with a crane XR700? I had to ditch the optical sensor because it was a POS and never fit quite right. I now have a petronics kit and have totally disconnected my XR700. I would love to use the petronix instead of the optical sensor and hook up the crane ignition box if possible.

TIA,

I have been running the Crane XR-700 since 1992 in my 74 2002 and have absolutely no problems with it. I am running the Pertronix unit in my 72 Volvo 1800ES, and once again absolutely no issues. Difference is the Pertronix is a Hall effect trigger, completely self contained within the distributor. Does nothing more that replace the points. No real performance gain above the ease of maintenance offered. The Crane unit does offer some performance increase.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
