Who runs coilovers?

Im curious as to what you all think about coilovers? My buddies run them on their E30's and have gotten good results from ground controll. What do you all run? Any good affordable kits (not that im in any position to make a big investment in the near future.) Anyone running them with re-valved bilsteins by any chance? What spring rates. The more info the better as this post is a little fact finding mission for me. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Jonas

I've got Irelands's coilovers with adjustable camber plates. They are fine for the street and great for the track. I use them with Bilstein Sorts and 275 lb springs, although I'm going to go up to 400 lb soon. The only modification I'd suggest is to cut rubber donuts out of rubber to place on top and below the springs, otherwise the metal-metal junction rattles when you go over bumps.

But with shortened Tii struts and Bilstein VW Rabbit inserts. Springs are 375 upfront. I suspect that Ian's knocking on bumps is caused by loose inserts or spherical bearings. suspension components should not make any noise.

For street, what cab be done is to use short springs (around 6inch long, with Carrera's helper springs. They stack under the regular springs and keep them tight on their perches. When stacked, the helper springs measure about 1 inch high.

The picture shows how helper springs look when installed. Not my suspension though. Cost is between $50 and $80 for a set.

I think they are all basically the same thing. I run 300# front springs 7" and do not need the helper springs. The roads here are kinda rough and this is a daily driver so I'll probabaly stay at 300 or lower depending in the balace with the rear springs that are on the way. Probably should use the shorter strut setup. I have HD bilstiens but I think their shot. Either its from bottoming out or they just can't take the higher spring rates- i dunno. Looking for something adjustable shock wise- leda?

What will you use your car for?

I run coilovers to get extra camber for the track.

Street spring rates are in the low 300's and sports.

race car has 400's on it right now and revalved short B's

The camber plate is the expensive part- coilovers are very cheap.

fwiw,

Toby

both my cars do make more noise than stock-

a regular knock is a loose part, but occasional bumps, clicks, and pops seem to be par for the course.
