There's still hope for BMWNA

I had started to think BMW had moved from its enthusiast roots in their corporate staff lately, so many tech and support people seem to have no connection to the history that made this company great. Yesterday, however, I spoke with our dealer service rep, the guy who referees dealer owner conflicts and allots "goodwill" funds. I asked if he was attending the 3 across America event next month in Chicago. He was unaware that club members were invited to bring their old threes to meet the new ones, and 02s were mentioned as part of the 3 heritage. He wondered if I was bringing the Mini, and I told him that I would bring my TII. He grabbed his briefcase and dug out a wad of old snapshots. We looked through pics of his Lotus Elan, super 7, 11,MGs, but he was disappointed not to have one of his 67 1600, which he said was used to blow the doors off of American iron back in the day. I hope to resurrect his respect for the role the 02 played in BMWs past, we could use another friend with the kind of influence he has.

the cities shown...they go right thru Indianapolis, Dayton and Columbus, but no stoppee, and I'm not gonna drive to St Louis or Cleveland just to see a new 3er...

on I5 about Fresno level. I was in my Turboized '69 1600-2 (this was about '77 or so) going effectively flat-out (about 95). They thought they were real funny gassing it faster and then dropping back next to me as I maintained my pace. After about ten minutes of their game a big cloud of oil-smoke farted from their heap and they faded away in my mirror. '02s aren't the fastest, but they'll go all day long at top speed, unlike most non-German cars.
