what up fellas

i am a new owner of a nice 74 2002. i am a novice when it comes to

mechanics but figured this is a great car to learn all i can.

I have had the car for about two weeks and now am noticing the small

things...noises and such i didn't notice when i was falling in love

buying it.

1. When i brake i hear a noise from the right rear that sounds almost

like what you would hear if you had a baseball card in the spokes of a

bicycle wheel? anyone know what this is and if it is serious enough for

me to stop driving.

2. When i drive over bumps, something underneath the floorboard near

my right foot makes a noise (feels like a pipe or something). what is it?

is it loose, is it supposed to be like this?

3. when i run the car for a while and am in city traffic the idle is really

high, but sometimes if I depress the gas pedal really fast then it will

drop back.

i look to the advise from the forum experts.

thanks

jay

Where are you located? First good idea is to get together with other '02 heads in your local area to get a look at things, to swap stories, and get advice...

Next piece of advice, always provide specific information where you can about your car. For example, your idle problem is likely a choke sticky issue, which is common with Weber 32/36 carbs, mine used to do that as well.

BTW the banging in the tranny tunnel is likely either loose exhaust or loose tranny mounts.

Check your brake shoes for wear, could be the braking problem, also check to make sure your drive shafts are securely attached.

WELCOME!!!

your idle problem might be in the linkage, check your two returns springs, one by the firewall and another outside the pedal box. Last one usually breaks. Lubricate all the linkages too.

My linkages were getting interfered with by the bottom foam peddle box cover -- I'd press the gas and it wouldn't return to idle very easily. Got under the car and found that foam hanging down in the way of the linkage.

My first drivers school we are taking my car around the skid pad. Instructor says to lift on the throttle. I do, but the car keeps at a constant acceleration. Second time around the instructor yells at me to "LIFT!" With the steering wheel cranked over, I lift my right foot clear of the seat bottom and yell back at him "I AM OFF OF THE THROTTLE!"

We pit the car and find out that the throttle linkage would just catch on the clutch slave and act as a cruise control.

The other story is when the arm on the outside of the pedal box came loose and all I could get was a touch over idle speed. (Damn, I'm gonna have to check that tonight)

and the drive shaft is often called the propeller shaft

I can't offer and advice for you specific questions, but, in addition to finding some other 02 heads to campare cars and notes with face to face:

Get as many different tpyes of shop manuals as you can. Surpisingly, the original owner's manuals were a wealth of information. Haynes is almost mandatory. And you'll want a copy of Mike Macartney's 02 Restoration Guide.

You can get the Haynes and Macartney books from Amazon through the link on this site. going through the FAQ link costs the same and provides a bit of support for this board.

And Welcome!
