Have a few questions regarding the tune up im performing on

Ok, so today i replaced the starter (what a pain in the ass that was... well getting to those bolts was at least). Anyway, i got a cap, rotor, plugs, points, condensor, and im going to flush my coolant. Ok, now the questions.

1) Are the 2002 and 2002 Turbo points the same? I pulled the old one off of my car and its exactly opposite the new one. Is that a problem?

2) I know im supposed to set the gap on the points but how in the hell do i do that?

3) How much coolant does the system take? I want to pre-mix my coolant, water, and water=wetter so i want to know how much i should mix up?

Thanks in advance. What else should i know here? Im still new so im just trying to learn as much as possible. Thanks everyone!

Cheers

Jonas

2) Initial gap setting can be done with a feeler guage. Look in the repair manual. There is usually a gap spec when the points are sitting on top of the cam lobe. Adjust the gap by loosening the hold down screw and passing the feeler guage through the gap so it just fits. After that you can get the engine started and measure the dwell with your dwell meter to get a better setting around the 60° spec.

3) Coolant capacity. The engine, heater, and radiator hold around 1½ gallons if you have a stock radiator. A little more if you have a 3 core or a 320i.

Hope this helps,

it in a bit more detail for me? Im still a bit confused about it. Also, i don't have a manual, so who has the specs that its supposed to be set at?

put the car on a flat level surface, pull off the dist cap. Put the car in 2nd or 3rd gear e-brake off.

in the dist is a cam that turns, with lobes that stick out. the points ride against this cam and as it turns they open as each lobe passes. With the car in gear, you can bump it a bit and the cam wll turn. To adjust the points, bump it until the pad on the points is at the peak of one of the lobes on the cam. The points will be open to their widest point. loosen the screw on the points so that you can adjust them but they still kind of stick. Nudge them with a screwdriver until the gap is the width it needs to be and tighten the screw. then measure them again because the move sometimes when you tighten them. then you can check with a dwell meter and adjust again if necessary.

also

get a haynes manual.

good luck

There are reverse dizzys, etc - but unless someone chimes in, i think the gaps are the same.

You COULD always get the petronix module insert - ditching the sloppiness of points in general. A worthwhile upgrade...

One gallon ethylene glycol antifreeze

One gallon distilled water ($1 at grocery store)

Water Wetter to taste

Pour all in a large bucket and stir.

Fill cooling system from bucket.

Pour excess into antifreeze jug and mark it "MIXED 50:50". Store and use for top-ups.

they know where you can take it. Many auto parts stores will take it, and repair shops are set up to recycle it. Don't dump it on the ground, in a storm drain, or in the sewer. Pets eat it and die.

Thanks for asking.

The local dump has a place you can get rid of such things. Be a good citizen and take it there. Or maybe your local auto parts store will know.
