'02 amigos,

So I"m going to replace my motor mounts, can this be done w/o a cherry picker or should I just go rent one?

Also, tips on how to hook it up to the motor?

Any other advice on this operation?

I recall all we used was a jack with a block of wood and lifted the engine from below. Nothing even had to be removed (althought the distributor cap got CLOSE to the firewall)

But - YMMV. I'm getting old now and my memory isn't what it used to be (according to wy wife...)

I agree with what Kevin said. I did mine last year using a floor jack and piece of wood. Just make sure you keep a close eye on the distributor as you raise the engine. I comes close to the firewall, but you should have enough room.

On the pan. We did one mount at a time so we didn't need the strap (or even had it as an issue in my mind).

The engine wasn't up on the jack for more than a few moments at a time. The mounts went in pretty easy.

I recall using the E12 mount on the drivers (?) side as it is bigger than the stock 02 mount but still fit fine. I think that is the way the engine wants to torque to so the extra material is good to get in there.

We did the other side with the stock 02 mount and the tranny mount with the E30 one (E21?) as I recall as well.

All in all - Not that long an ordeal.

I have all three and I wouldn't go back.

I also did it with a floor jack and a block of wood. It was a really easy job except for a few seconds putting my fingers in harm's way.

With the car on jackstands, you can support the engine with a block of wood on your floorjack. The passenger side mount can be accessed from under the car, and the drive's side mount from the top.

Hmm, I was wondering how my distributor cap retaining clip got bent, and the cap was loose and rattling around.

I replaced my motor mounts about two weeks prior to noticing this condition...
