engine and drivetrain Carb Problems

I have a 72, and over the last two weeks the carbuerator

started having a problem. When I come to a stops sign, light

or just plain old stop, the engine continues to race at about 2-

3k rpm. A tap to the accelerator pedal drops the engine back

to 1k. If i don't depress the accelerator again, it'll idle just fine

at just shy of 1k.

Any ideas on what I should poke at first?

I guessing its somehow the choke acting up, because messed up throttle linkage wouldn't just go away.

it doesnt seem to me that the choke would make it rev that high- possibly an additional 500 rpms but not 2-3000.

Start with the easy stuff, make sure the linkeage is clean and lubed.

Could be years of gunk making it sticky. Electric or water choke by

chance?
