What is this and where did it come from?

I backed the '02 out of the garage this morning and found this sitting under the engine bay (the nut, not the penny!):

Now it's 'possible' that it rolled across the garage floor and just happened to come to rest under the '02 but it's not likely.

Any guesses? If not, I guess I'll start playing nut detective when I get home tonight. Nothing seems out of place, the car's not making any funny noises (well, no funnier than normal), everything still seems to be working but this thing came from someplace??!?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions (regarding the nut).

That looks like one of those oval-tension "locknuts" that were used in varying places on our car. The first that comes to mind is the rear sub-frame mounts. I'm sure they're in other places as well, but can't remember which places...

Well, if it's made of copper and is 12mm, then it is an exhaust manifold nut. If it is 14mm and not made of copper, then it could be one of the nuts that holds the downpiper to the exhaust manifold.

Just a starting point ...

How about the nut that holds the linkage on your carburetor. Given the washer pattern on it, I'm thinking this is the most likely place to look....

Looks just like the ones on Weber 32/36 carbs....

We want to know who wins this survey!

02MonsterMike!! It's the brake light switch lock nut!!

I ran down and looked and sure enough, the switch is missing a locknut! It has since been re-attached, adjusted, tightened and there is peace in the universe once more!

Congratualtions Mike, you win the penny in the picture. Just send me a SASE and $7.95 for S&H and I'll get it sent right out... ;)

Seriously though, you guys saved me a ton of searching, thanks a million!!

I guess I'm just working on my cars too damned much....

Like that is even physically possible...

Glad I could help.
