Any drawbacks to installing a lightweight flywheel in my M42 equipped E30? I have to do a new clutch anyway, and the aluminum flywheel ways 20lbs less.

The original heavy fly wheel is used so as you let the clutch out the engine will keep its revs up. The rotating mass of the flywheel (an object in motion will stay in motion) reduces the streign on the engine. ONCE the lightned fly is installed you will need to be a little more carefull when pulling out from a light. you will get used to its different feeling and tendencie to require a little more gas to get started. ONCE your moving its GREAT, the lack of mass as you accelerate from 35to say 45 is very noticable (in a good way).

Good luck

I'm guessing you are replacing the dual-mass flywheel.

One consideration here is that the DMF functions to limit gear rattle in the trans, similar to the damper springs on the clutch disc hub.

When BMW uses a DMF, they design the clutch driven disc to work with that, and the damping springs may be eliminated or significantly reduced.

If you use the AL flywheel with a rigid disc, you will no doubt hear the trans gear rattle. It the OE disc is lightly damped, some extra noise may still come thru.

Those that replace the front crank hub damper with a light weight pulley, at the same time as removing a DMF are in for a real treat if they keep an unsprung clutch driven disc!
