Allegedly five of these head kits came into the country back in the early 80's. I ended up with one and one other ended up on a Schnitzer Gruppe 2 car that I think is down in Georgia. I don't know that I have actually seen one for sale in a very long time (+15 years) that wasn't part of an engine. Two or three years ago there were a couple on race cars.com-1 sold for $8900 and one was $15,000. I saw a carubretted engine that looked really tired sell for like $12k from one of the other racecar websites a few years back as well. They do occasionally come up for sale. I think you could pick off an entire engine possibly for $10k-it may need rebuilding though and that can be a pricey deal (Believe me I know). There are actually quite a few pieces to complete a head kit so buyer beware if someone tries to sell you one. And clearly buyer beware of used ones as well--which is porbably what you would find. Lots of these heads were machined to raise compression, radical porting, sunken valve seats from valves getting hammered at 10,000 rpm and on. If you come accross one that is for sale let me know what is included and I can try to help you with determining how complete it is. Markus Glarner might be a good source if you are seriously trying to locate one.

the motor itself wasn't homologated for use in Gruppe 2 until 1973 (Jan 1) so it is "beyond period" for many of the race assoications. Most of those out here on the west coast (VARA, HSR West, etc.,) recognize the 02 with various mods up to 1972 (essentially "trans-am" cars") so the Schnitzer twin cam motor falls after the period. That said, nost of those I have contacted have indicated they would allow my car to run in one of their classes (exhibition probably) with cars that are beyond the period groups they typically have. Its interesting that Schnitzer built that engine specifically for use in the 2002 and homologated it that way. Later on, they became the "cheaper" alternative to the M12/7 for use in F2 (I think maybe in 1974 but not sure). Some of the early F2 engines were run "canted" as in an 02 before Schnitzer fabricated the parts for them to run straight up and down as typically seen in F2 cars. That same Schnitzer head assembly is for all intents and purposes now the bmw E30 m3 head (at least its a lot closer to the Schnitzer head than the M12).
