+1 for Aardvarc.  My rebuild was $1500 including the upgrade to LSD and shipping. Money well spent IMO, but I also totally get wanting to do it yourself.

I rebuilt a Moto Guzzi diff once and that was plenty for me.

Pull the back cover.

Pull the flange bolts.  And the flanges.

Pull the side cover bolts, and then the side covers.  Keep the shims with the covers,

and the covers with the case.

Then the center comes out.

Then you decide if you want to pull the pinion, at which point you take the pinion nut off.

Keep the pinion shims with the pinion.

After that, it depends on what you want to do to the thing.

If you're not changing bearings, you don't need a press.

If you are changing bearings, you need a press and some pretty specific bearing separators,

and a bit of tube to use to press the pinion bearing into place.

You'll also want some shims, usually- although I find that 85% of the ones I've taken apart

have gone back together with the same shims as they came apart with.

If you move gearsets into other cases, keep the shims with the gearsets

initially, and then check your assembly pattern afterwards.  Case widths seem

to be pretty consistent within styles, but it always pays to check side shims before anything else.

It's best to have the first one you do be a differential you don't need

that didn't cost you much...

@TobyB how do I take the retention clips off?

Rebuilding a differential is not as complex as one would think and with a little patience and the proper tools/techniques, it's something most can accomplish on their own. The diff I'm doing here belongs to Crusty320. It's an LSD unit from an 83 IS, but I won't be getting into the clutch...

I suggest you attach a few pictures of your diff so we can help you how to take it apart. There were at least 2 style for flanges fasten to the housing.

Which ones?

The 320 version sit inside the grooves, and can take a solid whack

(on a prybar works, a slide hammer's ideal)

and the 76- only may have to be taken out from inside the diff.

I say 'may' because I've never seen the internal- clipped 76 version, only the 320- style 76 version.

Basically, if you look inside the carrier, at the insides of the spiders, if you see 2 clips holding the ends

of the stubs, pry them out!  If there's a threaded hole, unbolt the bolts,

and if it's a smooth shaft end, then you just pry, whack, and then try to do both at the same time.

The pop- out style can be pretty stuck...  or pop right out.

@TobyB they were on the inside. I had to hook a filler rod through the top of the clip. Then pulled up against the weight of the diff. That popped them off.

Has anybody tried converting an open to lsd? I’ve seen those kits to do it.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

@AceAndrew oh you wrote the technical article. Very cool. Is there a reason I can’t see the photos? Does it it have to do with ad block or my cookie settings? If you know.

Have you tried using these to convert to an lsd?

Yes, there are some threads on them where I've given my opinion, some searching should bring them up.  The results being, they are not a good alternative to an actual LSD.

Can you use an lsd from a z3 or e36 318is?

I haven’t seen a lot of 318ti in my area.

I downloaded the original word file and made a pdf when all of it was there.

I have a suggested addition.

Before mounting the ring gear install the carrier with the new bearings and side covers to determine the TOTAL shim thickness for the side covers to give the correct bearing pre-load for the new bearings.

Then mount the ring gear and determine the shim on the driver's side shim thickness for correct backlash.  The remaining passenger's shim is what is leftover from the TOTAL shim thickness determined earlir
