Asheville NC area among many hit bad by Helene

Recommended Posts

I know many of you make the annual 02 pilgrimage to The Vintage, which is held there or thereabouts.

Asheville got over 12” in 24 hrs from Helene. The Old Highway 70 along the river got washed away. Still no power, water or cell connections, and all western NC highways are closed. 😔

Thoughts for this 02er friendly/familiar community…and the many others in the south Atlantic region devastated by this hurricane.

I hope all FAQers are okay…

I’m in Augusta. The whole town is wrecked. The power is out. The city of Augusta shut off the water. Power lines are down everywhere. I’ve never seen anything like it. I packed the family and the dogs and we headed for Charleston yesterday.

GA power estimates that power will be restored by Oct. 5 just before midnight, but I’m not holding my breath.

The attached photo is of a main thoroughfare as you pull out of an adjacent neighborhood. The photo was taken at sunup yesterday.

Hot Springs posted on The Vintage Facebook page.

wow this hits home. That little town has such great charm and really strong small businesses. The pizza place and brewery were fantastic.

Hopefully Scott Sturdy--Mr Vintage--and his family are OK, and that our favorite road--US 25 from Asheville to Hot Springs, can be repaired in time for Vintage.  Another favorite stretch--I-40 from the TN border to its junction with I-26 just north of Asheville--is closed due to part of the road washing into the adjacent Pigeon River.  I'll bet the Vintage site was a lake, as it's adjacent to the French Broad River, which flooded historically.

Many villages and townships are devastated. Homes, businesses and lives washed away. Friends in the area that survived are doing what they must to continue. It will be a long road back to any form of normalcy, and impossible for some. Heartbreaking.

The tiny village of Chimney Rock, gone.

I'm in downtown Asheville.  its is devastated and all the little towns around Asheville are just in ruins too.  Biltmore Village, Black Mtn, Swannanoa, Old Fort, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, etc, etc.  Just in ruins.  Here are some limited pics I have of Biltmore Village.

For those of us who participated in Mike Pugh's "'02s and Brews" tour prior to Vintage about ten years ago--the restaurant in Chimney Rock where we stopped for lunch is pretty much gone--along with most of downtown Chimney Rock.

This is all so sad for us and tragic for the residents of the Asheville region. I hope that FEMA, the National Guard, the Red Cross and other volunteer organizations can help the people get through the tough times associated with Helene.
