Why playing at Target this evening, I've found that my daughter is now big enough to ride a trike. Anyone have a reccommendation for a cool trike? For example, Trek makes one with big tires that's cool, but might be hard for a first trike b/c of the rolling resistance from the big tires. Any other suggestions?

Pretty expensive and a bit on the big side for our little guy, but Sky King is the ride. There are also pink (Princess, I think it was called) and black versions available. Google it, they're all over the place.

That said, we got a simpler '30 repro of a Colson trike made by Kool Stop. It's a little smaller and less expensive:

Again, Google...

For our third and maybe second daughter, we just went with the small bike.

I had a lot of fun looking for kids bikes since I used to work in a bike shop in high school and college.

I, likewise, worked at bikeshops through highschool and college, so a cool bike/trike for my kid is important. Also, as a mechanical engineer, I appreciate cool machines.

I'm thinking a trike is the way to go, right now, b/c we've got a second baby on the way that'll be two years younger than Gracie (my daughter). When Gracie is ready to move on to a bicycle, dos (we have no name for #2 yet) will just be old enough for the trike.

You know, when I was growing up(still am), all the other neighborhood kids had BigWheels and would go tearing up and down the sidewalk.

I had a RoadRunner pedal car that took up more than half of the sidewalk. I remember powersliding out of my driveway and onto the sidewalk only to hear them BigWheelers screaming and jumping out of the way.

Probably explains a lot.

The worst wrecks my kids did were on other kid's bikes with training wheels. Highsides, the rear sliding out, lean into a turn and then no brakes because the rear wheels are off the ground. Even tipping over after a stop because the training wheels were too bent to work. Very young kids can learn the balance thing if you work with them, a tricycle is good till then.
