Dual Front Calipers?

The strut mounting holes and strut tube hard line mounts are already there. Anybody try it? I imagine you would need a larger bore master cylinder so your pedal stroke would stay within reason.

yeah, two per side. I'm not saying I've done it, am going to do it, or even have heard of it done.......I'm just thinking. But the mounts ARE there.

I remember when I was rebuilding my front suspension last year, I accidently put calipers on the front ears, and I was never able to bleed them properly. The bleeder screw was in the wrong location causing a HUGE air bubble and no pressure within that circuit.

There would be some incredible braking forces generated at the front wheel- would be interesting to think about....

I remember running a support race with our ITC Scirocco before the Toronto Indy several years ago. The NATCC guys were also running the same day. I remember wandering into their pits, and noticing their dual caliper setups. Neat, but overkill.

I remember him saying that he used different pad compounds on each of the 2 calipers- one that worked well at cool temps, then one that worked well at higher temps- that way he had all the bases covered! I remember seeing this car at many of the local NC driver's schools back when he first built it- man was that cool!!

IIRC, this is the same car (Inka tii) that is in one of the more popular BMW books- the picture shows the engine bay- clearly filled with M20 power, and mentions how this is the sought after tii engine....

i did exactly what pete told me about, and the car

stopped so well that i actually got good at

controlling the car or just hammering the pedal

and smoking the front tires at 80MPH!!

regular pads on the front and ferodo metalic

pads on the back caliper. just when the front pads

started to fade the metalics were hot enough to

start working well. parts:

four 325i front calipers w/ brackets

325i front discs

.305inches spacer

tii struts

good pads

shit eating grin remover for daily use

this set up was great and scared the hell

out of cars around me.

somewhere i have pictures of the strut with

calipers mounted.

i imagine youd have to do something with the rears to even out the braking power a little. that was a problem with the e28 m5s. huge 4 pot vented up front with stock e28 non-vented one pots in the rear. would it really improve braking enough to make it worthy?

The usual big brake kit is more than adequate for road cars

and with an extra caliper you're just adding a HUGE amount

of unsprung weight - not good.

Pete McHenry did this with 325i calipers a few years ago, he claimed incredible stopping power on the track. I ground the front mounts off my struts to get more air into my vented discs to cool the big-brake conversion.
