The mechanic that installed the 38 used the same intake manifold that I had for the 32/36. At low rpm's the car starts wit a roar and it seems like its going to accelerate hard. As soon as the rpm's hit somewhere around 3500 (only estimated cause the darn tachometer is not working) it starts to die. Could it be adjustment?

When the car is not underload (in neutral) you can turnm the throttle as much as you want, it will always sound good. But when it requires morte fuel to get that extra torque to push the car, this is when an unproperly jetted car comes out... Verify with other members what their jetting is. also on the manifold subject. Have it enlarged to 38/38, or the carb won't be better that the one it replaces.

Unlike the 32/36, there are TWO mixture screws. If I

remember correctly they need to be backed out about two full

turns each, maybe a little more. You probably already knew

about both screws, but just trying to cover all bases.

needs to be hogged-out to match the larger throats of the 38/38s. This might be the source of both of your problems. Should be info under search on this. You don't wanta be responsible for killing kittens do you, Pablo?

Is this a new problem? If so thoroughly check the ignition system first. Since others have already touched on the fuel related issues (which it most likely is), I'll mention the spark plug wires. If you had a mechanic put on a new carb for you, did he also put new plug wires in? I've seen an engine with a perfectly fine ignition and fuel system run like crap at higher RPMs simply because the plug wires were arcing to ground on the frame of the car. What has changed on the car since it last ran fine?

before i start - i have a stock 170K Miles motor, runs fairly strong (or will when i fix the engine mounts...)

mild smoke on decel. that out of the way, here goes....

From what i can gleam from the usual online sources, this seems to be fairly typical out of the box for the 38:

Idle jets 45

Main jets 142***

Air jets 85

DEFFO hog out the manifold....

Concensus seems to be;

Idle is OK - maybe tinker with a 40

Mains jetting is the tinkering opportunity

Mains - dropping to 130 maybe too lean

Mains - above 150 maybe too rich (IE between 130 and 150 is the range)

Air - stock seems OK

***My motor HAD a slight bog just above 2k. I added a 150 mains, and WOW.....

Good luck playing....
