Can't say I disagree with you completely. This was work related, mostly. Didn't hurt that my California divorce left me broke, but the midwestern economy allowed me to by 10 times the house at half the price. Plus the people here are really friendly, and don't mind the fact that at heart I'm a complete redneck (hence the hillbilly truck parked in front of the house).

On the other hand, the climate here leaves something to be desired. I don't mind the cold of winter, but I can do without the August steam.

See ya 'round.

Why? Work. I lost my job in June '03 when the company folded. The very last day of employment, I took a job with this company in St Louis. They said I could work out of my house in Santa Rosa, but travel would be necessary for a 'few months'. So for 14 months I flew to St Louis EVERY WEEK. During this period, my marriage fell apart. I couldn't count on the wife to watch my dog, etc., while I flew back and forth to St Louis, so in August '04 I said 'hell with it', packed my dog and parrot into my old Dodge camper van, along with clothes, etc., and headed East. Divorce is final now, I have a lovely girlfriend here in St Louis, and bought a beautiful house for about 10% what it would cost in the Bay Area. I don't know if I'll stay forever, but it works for now.
