Last Night: Think to myself…Self, tonight I can remove the exhaust manifold…Shouldn’t take that long…That PB Blaster has been on their a couple of days, they should come right off. Reality then sets in, sweating, cursing, kicking and several body contortions later it’s off. Nuts didn’t come off…ALL of the studs came out. No problem…have some I ordered from 2002AD (I was thinking ahead). Problem, these look different from what I just removed as they are threaded from top to bottom, no shoulder. Call it a night and research exhaust studs on the FAQ. FAQ says use studs with shoulders. Today: Call and order new studs with shoulders. I just love these cars.

just use two nuts and tighten them against each other near the top of the stud - this will let you use a wrench to turn the stud and thread it into the head. then untighten the nuts and presto..............

The key to strength is not to bottom out the studs either into the shoulders or the bottom of the hole, explained a little in the faq link. Bottoming it out either way concentrates the stress in a small area of the threaded hole in the head. For a better explanation ask an aircraft mechanic.

don't let the nut tighten down onto the shoulder either, it should come to the correct torque while still on the threaded area, without touching the shoulder. If the nut tightens down onto a shoulder it causes a stress inside the bolt at this point, more likely to break in use or when you pull it off next time. A shoulder is only to locate the manifold or other part without damaging threads, not to tighten anything to. This is true with any bolts or studs, not just manifolds. That is one advantage of using original BMW hardware, the engineers knew this stuff.
