Did he recognize the 89.22mm spec?


I had thought of going two or more steps over but the block had a fresh one step over bore done in 1992 and only has 10k miles on it so I figured I needn't bore it again. The pistons, bores & cross hatch are still like new and measure perfectly parallel. The lower end and oil pump are the same condition, like new.


It ran well for after 28 years of sitting but the E12 head had deteriorated at the gasket line and opened up after a few miles of driving, dumping coolant in. Too deteriorated to weld. My new/used head came with a 300+ duration with bored journals which is way too much for 8.1:1 so Im checking into a more normal grind cam with the big journals. While the head was off I'm checking on pistons.


I wanted to try for a bit more compression than 8.1:1 to gain lower end torque between 2k-4k rpm. Its probably wishful thinking to get new pistons of the same 89.22mm diam. that would have the same exact clearance as I have not but they shouldn't be far off.  I believe piston/bore clearance is about .002" slide fit. 


The E12 head w/~60cc chambers gives me some leeway on domes. Given the timeline seems extended to find these I'll probably keep the flat tops and cam it accordingly.  Figured I'd look around for pistons until I hear back from the cam company.

I say go turbo that will give you the extra punch in seat you desire. I plan on doing a fuel injection conversion my 02 and then add a turbo I already have most of the parts needed except the ecu but I'll. Buy that last since technology is always advancing at an alarmingly fast rate these days

Stuck with the one step flat tops, stock duration cam w/2mm additional lift (turbo grind??), 32/36 Weber synchronous.  Runs great, pulls hard all the way. I'll post jets when done, a little fat now. Wideband O2 says AF10.5:1 at cruise for any RPM up to 5500. Idle is good at AF12.5:1. Pedal floored leans a bit at 13ish:1 but to be expected. Highly recommend throttle brgs with the synchronizer. Smooth action.
