And so it begins, the '73 2002

Hi All!

I'm new to the group and this is my first of hopefully many posts.

In mid 2022 my father and I purchased a 1973 2002 that has laid stripped in a garage dating back to the early 90's.

As Irish cars it is relatively rust free and solid. Original colour was 070 Golf yellow.

This will be a long term project that my father, son (currently 1) and I will hopefully be able to spend some time together restoring away from our busy lives.

Cheers 🙂

Hey man, welcome to the world of 2002ing! That is a solid looking 73. Golf yellow is certainly a fun and rare color but looks like if you gave your current verona paint a wash and a buff it may look pretty ok. The car looks like will need the engine and gearbox reassembly to be functional again. Well, you have landed in the best forum possible for New/used parts and advice. All the best and let us know whatever we can help you with.

Another welcome!  The 02 fraternity/sorority is alive and well world-wide.  It's amazing how many posts come from folks where you'd never think there would be a 2002.  We're all here to help and share the not inconsiderable hive knowledge of 2002s, so don't be shy about asking questions.

Keep us posted on your progress.  And BTW, what's that large aluminum casting to the right of the tranny in your car's trunk?  Doesn't look familiar...

Would you believe I never even noticed that the casting wasn't associated with the car at all? 😅

Appears to be an engine sump, off of what, God only knows. Also included was a steam wall paper stripper?

General plan for the car is a complete rebuild, not quite original but it's an ever-developing idea. One thing is for sure is that I will have a difficult time convincing my father not to spray paint it orange. He's very sentimental about a tii he owned back in the 80's

I had a few spare hours today so the disassembly continues. Indicators out, bumper, fenders and bonnet off also.

Next priority is to find a safe space in the shed for all the glass and get it removed along with the doors and dash.

Till then, stay safe and thanks for all the help and comments!

Welcome to best section of the Internet. Consider setting up a blog here and document the progress. Many folks like myself find helpful and inspirational. Good luck!

Thank you, I most certainly will, this is all very new to me so was unsure whether a go thread or blog when initially posting.

Either way It's great to bring you all on the journey!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
