Spotted an ad on local CL for a "2002 Engine" A guy down in Cottage Grove was going through his deceased fathers stuff at his home and found some previously overlooked 2002 stuff.

Specifically an engine, normally I would not have much interest, having more cores than I can use but one of the pics caught my eye.

It was of a red metal chest containing two M10 heads and misc parts, an E12 and a 121. That piqued my interest enough to make the 45 minute drive down to check it out.

I bought it, paid the asking price of $350. This is what I got:

A 2l M10 engine, head removed, low dome piano tops in 1st oversize

An E12 cylinder head complete, has been resurfaced

A 121 cylinder head with apparently a fresh overhaul including pressure test, has a weld repair

couple of 2 barrel intakes, a stack of alternators and starters, misc bits and gaskets.

An engine stand.

The cylinder heads were pretty much what I was focused on, a serviceable 121 head would really streamline Project Franzi and a good E12 head is just good to have around, ya know?😉

Sound like they were sitting in that box for many years.

This guy told me his dad was pretty much local 2002 royalty, that Dave Lumbra sent him a Christmas card every year!

There were like 3 2002s and a 68 1600 sitting there along with an 84 E30, all sold thank goodness. My Mom says  I cant bring home any more stray cars.

Interesting that your "121" head, dated 1969 is a "plain" 121.  My '69, still with its original cylinder head is marked "121ti" and I believe has a '68 casting date, as the car was assembled in February 1969.

for a grand total of $205

I'm paying well over double that nowadays

Have high hopes for this 121 head, it would be a better choice for this engine (with 2nd OS flat tops) than the available E21 2.0.

Raises the compression ratio a bit and no need to buy/plumb/wire an electric fuel pump

Drove back down to Cottage Grove yesterday with Kia and trailer to pick up the engine and misc parts I purchased last week.

Good thing I got there early, the guy from CA who bought all the cars had tried to load up my engine into a U haul despite being told not to touch it. Still managed to make off with a tote full of manifolds.

A call to the owner put a stop to it, He had been clearly informed that the engine and all stuff next to it were mine and not to touch. Guess he figured since no one was around he  would just steal it all.

What a car flipping, low life, punk ass  a hole!  Too bad these 5 BMWs went to him.

A complete idiot as well, note pic 2, this thieving dimwit thought he could just hook a tow bar onto a rotten tire, sitting for 25 years 2002 and drag it back down to CA.

Clearly has no plan and no clue how to get these cars transported, its a shame they went to him.

Anyway got all my stuff back home including the manifolds, the owner had to drive to where they were getting gas on I5 and take them back.

Took a closer look at the engine I acquired today. There is no VIN in the usual spot, just an X.

If memory serves, that indicates a reman engine right?

It looks pretty good overall, seriously considering doing a dice roll.

As in, reinstall the head and run it in Franzi

Yes, it’s a factory-remanufactured engine. There’s a better description of the “21 A 11 81” stamped into the rear upper ledge of the block — just behind the head — in the following Article.

 

 

It’s a code 21 engine, remanufactured in November 1981 (“11  81”). As was often the case, and testament to the generally poor condition of used ‘02 heads, the E12 head, cast September 1981 (nine nubs surrounding “81”) was certainly new at the time of the remanufacturing.

 

First oversize pistons, 89.22 mm., on the block cast June 13, 1973 (“13F” within the raised oval and “73” outside the oval), fits the usual BMW remanufacturing profile. They look like 8.3, or so, to me.
