Wow...had no idea that Simple Green would remove paint.

Am pretty sure it was simple green. I wouldn't have used carb cleaner or anything like that. I just remember thinking "ouch, don't do that again".

Along those lines, the paint on the speedo and tach faces is really easy to wipe right off.

Solid progress over the last couple of days.

tl;dr

IMG_8441.thumb.jpeg.236adbcfed829a358fd487fa3c2383d8.jpeg

We:

  • Labeled all engine bay wiring and either pulled it out or pushed it into the cabin. This took longer than expected due to the number of relays + the fuse box
  • Removed front brake lines, this took longer than expected b/c of difficult to remove brake line nuts (on the flares)
  • Dropped the front subframe
  • Removed headlight buckets
  • Removed gauges

First, cleaned wires with goo gone (thanks @jgerock)

IMG_8399.thumb.jpeg.fbf5ebb92024ca998c5d9716076ecd12.jpeg

Found that washer I dropped in 2005.

IMG_8398.thumb.jpeg.0b89708f34ebd9af8742ea2858bd30a7.jpeg

Felt like endless labeling on relays.

IMG_8400.thumb.jpeg.88705fa2fb8c114b1fdce01651740c13.jpeg

Cables are starting to disappear:

IMG_8407.thumb.jpeg.73cb5ae55c0dbd77caae58a7d77793f2.jpeg

Found a mouse nest.

IMG_8410.thumb.jpeg.4e93633726775f71ba24d0ca8cb8a648.jpeg

An incredible amount of paper, hair and bits and bobs. Did not smell and no mouse body, I think it is pretty old.

IMG_8412.thumb.jpeg.c80711ccdd12e3f8848f46d045b3f7e8.jpeg

Had to use the flexible gripper to pull it all out.

IMG_8414.thumb.jpeg.e4c1532d9f879dae6aa1156b678508d8.jpeg

Getting closer.

IMG_8407.thumb.jpeg.73cb5ae55c0dbd77caae58a7d77793f2.jpeg

I never realized the bottom of the fuse box is a cheat sheet for the wires themselves.

IMG_8418.thumb.jpeg.a06cae5522c8b56db235478f42281e8d.jpeg

So many wires. Curious if there is a replacement for the small white plastic shields on some of them.

IMG_8419.thumb.jpeg.aba9ae5b8d02803905efa99e1e112098.jpeg

Wire management.

IMG_8421.thumb.jpeg.bac23d0ea92d39fc914836bd7f6b70f8.jpeg

Removing the cluster and routing the wires.

IMG_8423.thumb.jpeg.212f2d8f2829504780ba3b93d82a6f46.jpeg

A lot of memory photos to remember how it all goes back.

IMG_8426.thumb.jpeg.eb7d14d67c3e55d69a38aed5007eb953.jpeg

The nuts on the brake flares REALLY gave me trouble. I didn't want to strip it, nor did I want to bend new lines. So, I soaked them and used these vice-grips to hold the 11mm nut while using the 14mm on the bottom half.

IMG_8427.thumb.jpeg.295bed24c0318c81b56fc6d4bcf72ab6.jpeg

Three 17mm bolts on both sides. I first put a jack under the center.

IMG_8428.thumb.jpeg.6faa965d67ccfe22096a3e2f3bfc1f4c.jpeg

Subframe about to drop.

IMG_8433.thumb.jpeg.30b468cc795a100c253c2fae1a14873d.jpeg

Subframe almost down.

IMG_8434.thumb.jpeg.b4a16650084280acfaea836f807fd7df.jpeg

Cool, the sway bar labels still in place!

IMG_8435.thumb.jpeg.86cf89ef4752eb0c355d71bcae47514d.jpeg'

One of the shafts on the headlight bucket sheared. The rest got pb blaster and came out, but much more difficult than I thought. Need anti-seize.

IMG_8436.thumb.jpeg.54221b33fed1a5d61f1e105207ae90e8.jpegIMG_8437.thumb.jpeg.150fb98db94c06058d1c90852f0289f3.jpeg

Wow, this was a surprise. I know that control arm was beat up but didn't realize the subframe had a chunk taken out of it too. It *looks* like the metal edge had caught on something, probably a curb. I bent a rim a long long time ago exiting highway 9 in the bay area. I'll measure it carefully, if all looks good I'll dismantle, bend back and then weld.

IMG_8439.thumb.jpeg.740a614226440c9141651711f31f1e9c.jpeg

Can now see what it all looks like.

IMG_8442.thumb.jpeg.4af9b76d11086c8942f747bd6e5aca6a.jpeg

More rust under that firewall cover than I would have thought. It's mostly surface rust but some scale too. I'm glad I'm taking care of it.

IMG_8443.thumb.jpeg.e9e6c8f02fbbf2c3588584a2c1469f36.jpeg

And how it looks now:

IMG_8441.thumb.jpeg.236adbcfed829a358fd487fa3c2383d8.jpeg

All in all I'm happy. A bit disappointed at the condition of some of the body now that I have up close vision to the metal itself. Hopefully have time to start cleaning the dirt over the weekend so that we can really see what needs to be done. I also want to pull the carpet completely.

Impressive effort (hands clapping) you really got after it.  Nice work!  Loving the M&N sticker still on there, was that a part you bought for the car or one that came with from the PO?  You have to be as old as dirt (like me) to know that that is/was and relevance to bmw 'tuning' - most don't and don't car......'lowered and lovered.......'  Keep up the good work, you motivated me to go out and do a few things today on mine...tx

The M&N sways were installed by the PO, same as shocks and springs (which IIRC are M&N too). I know I'll need to replace the shocks at least...

Ha ha, I definitely feel as old as dirt 🙂

Get at that racecar Mark! Just a little every day..

Seriously jealous of you effort! You get more done in one day than I did in the past year. I cleaned out the trunk of the e21 yesterday and fooled myself into thinking I was productive..

Amazing progress! For me, brake flare nuts = one entire day.

You might want to consider using a heat gun or steam when removing the old carpet if you want to re-use it. The old glue can really stick and rip the carpet.

Good call on that. I don't want to rip it (you know my thoughts on original carpet). Thanks @mccusername!

Jason, all of your hard work motivated me to get SOMETHING done......new Probolt  5 x 15mm (flange head, race drilled, Gr. 5 Titanium) hat/rotor bolts, torqued to spec and ss safety wire installed.  More than a few re-dos on the safety wire (it's been a while and wire is cheap), those bolts aren't going anywhere.  These are 20mm x 300 mm vented/slotted discs similar to the original Alpina's re-made Porterfield Ent, Costa Mesa, CA.  Originals were not slotted.  Looking forward to seeing your next update(s) Jason.

That car is rolling art Mark. Really really nice.

I'll be adding safety wire to the struts on the blue car too... I hope it's close to as good a job!

I had to slow down a bit but still holding true to at least a little bit everyday. I'm in cleaning mode in the engine bay and front suspension. More photos coming soon!

I'm also building a parts list. A bit dismayed at some of the prices since the last timeI did this. Are windshield gaskets really 250? Crazy.

Honestly W&N seems like they have prices that are hard to beat, even with shipping.  My wife and I are building a house out of state, it is effing unreal.  When we first started talking to the contractor back in 2020 +/- $300sf.  started construction April 2022 - its x 2 now.  Tear the band aid off.

Not much stock stuff on my car, though there are a few that I am regretting NOT buying now a few years ago (various trim etc.,), its ALL expensive, sorry to say it's going to be tough sledding for a while.

Borrow some safety wire pliers from someone (or rent them (or buy one for 30 bucks) check the internet some, practice a bit and you will have it.  You don't want to do all that work and have someone look at your safety wire and ask you if your uncle 'Chester' did that work......haha.  Love your project.  Cheers.  MM

Anyone know the PN of the plastic loop/clips that hold the harness to the nose of the car above the radiator?

I've looked on what feels like every page of realoem...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
