I can't believe the thought has even crossed my mind. I'm tempted to sell my '68 2002 to purchase a Mini Cooper S.

Prior to purchasing my 2002 I was actually looking for an older Mini when I stumbled across the 02 and had to have it. Now I'm floundering, torn between two lovers if you will...

Don't get me wrong, I love the 2002. My problem is I'm short on time to do all the work I want to it. I have an 18 month old son and will have another in the future. The practical side of me says I should sell it and get a new commuter. It seems as though the Mini would satisfy both needs (commuter and toy).

I know its my decision but I'd like your thoughts. What the hell am I thinking?

Todd

'68 project - dare I ask what you think I could get for it once its painted?

'99 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4 - to tow the 02 (and commute in at 11.5mpg)

...that way you'll have an idea about whether they start falling apart after 10k miles, allows time for the hysteria to die down (local Volvo dealer has a Cooper with like 20 miles, the small rims and no real options for $24,900 on their used lot), and lets the factory work out the year-one bugs.

My fiance is dying for one of them, but we're gonna wait and see for a little while before the Golf 1.8T gets traded...

Tell the wife that someone lent it to you when you need it for towing.

On second thought, don't buy the Suburban. Become good friends with a guy that has one.

actually more like 24,000. What's a S going to run? 10,000 over list?

I have a really hard time with that and have no problem in calling it what it is , a big rip off. It's like when the Miata came out. I think BMW dealers are taking lessons from Harley dealers on how to fuck over their loyal customers.

Don't get me wrong I think they're very cool $16,000 cars. But I'll wait till next year when all the reviews are out and I can get a used one for $10,000.

Its the original.

It won't be as expensive as a new one.

Its cooler, not just another retromobile (PT, Bug)

Or, wait out the initial craze and buy one used in a 2-3 years.

Don't get me wrong, i think they look good also, its just a little too trendy for me right now.

Actually I just bought a new mini Cooper and placed an order for a S (due in March unfortunately).

Now the decision is if to keep my supercharged 68' 2002 or sell it and another current BMW or two when my S comes in. Then keep both mini's?

The new Cooper is a very good car....handles like a gokart and is much quicker than I thought it would be (but not a rocket like the S). I just did a 2400 mi drive averaging 80+mph in one w/no problems and loving it the whole way. The car really feels solid and has that new BMW fit and finish.... It's easily worth the $20K it cost me.

Taking it to the track on friday.... I wonder how many Porche's and BMW's I can eat in the turns.....

1. Wait for Mini hysteria to die down, prices to go below list

2. While you're waiting, finish the '68, enjoy it a little

3. Then decide--to buy the Mini for everyday, keep the 02 for "fun"

You can never have too many cars... (I have 11)

back in '82 when i had tired of my squareback, i looked at and drove an original 's'- full rollcage, webers etc. after shoehorning myself into the car, and stirring the mush to find first, proceeded around the block. in the process of making a left onto haskell ave, i gave it some juice and popped the clutch- disaster. the driving splines on the left front gave and totally stripped! i broke this guys car on the test drive. needless to say, passed on the deal. sorry about that. next car i looked at was one owner '68 1600- for $1600 i was down the street.
