ZAZ Zaporozhets

The ZAZ Zaporozhets was built in Zaporizhzhia, a city on the Dnieper River in the southeastern part of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine ( now Ukraine ?). It has an air cooled V4 rear mounted engine good for about 40hp.

One of my uncles had one. And, what I remember about it was the sound and noise. It was a very popular car with people living in the countryside as it was rugged and had good traction and an independent suspension.

This was a car with the most possible variation in options. They were produced for people with disabilities. my father borrowed one from a guy who lost his arm, so the car had a shifter that was attached to one of his legs.

They did have some serious build quality issues, Sheetmetal was spot-welded and the floors leaked if you drove through the puddles in heavy rain.

the nickname for the car was Zaporschivitz.
