Very, very, very nice. There are always (minor) points with which one can quibble — many of which have already been noted — but who here would mind having this in their garage? ?

Actually they are on the wrong sides but really hard to find anything meaningful to complain. What a beatiful car, eager to see how high it goes.

I'm surprised that a 5.5" rim would fit in the spare tire well and allow the plywood trunk floor to fit properly.  Perhaps with 165 tires it will.  I know that a 5" rim with a 185 tire won't.

 

And if you bought an '02 new with alloy wheels, you got five, not four.  

 

WRT the interior door handles:  if you install the handles so they're close to being parallel to the ground, on some cars there isn't enough space between the handle and the armrest to fully unlatch the door's lock when you pull up on the handle.  You have to reposition the handle one spline down, and since the splines are coarse, it makes the handle droop down and look wrong.  The handle's mount goes into slotted holes, so there's some adjustment, but on some cars, not enough.

Based solely on anecdotal evidence provided on this forum, a 165/80 tire on a 5.5” rim stands a better chance of fitting in a round taillight spare tire well than in a square taillight spare tire well.

 

Why is that? I haven’t a clue!

Really surprised that this car with the colors, history, etc didn’t do better.  The original owner was pretty nutty with his pricing plus add to that all the expense and time of doing that level of restoration.  Not saying I know what the right number should be but seems to me the buyer got a deal.

But isn’t that usually the case with most concours level restorations? Unless the car itself is valued north of $150-250K, one rarely if ever expects to see a complete return on their restoration investment.
 

100K seems to be the ceiling for the most desirable year, in a desirable color, for a properly restored tii.

I'm not questioning the value of the car or the economics of restorations done properly.  If someone sinks $100k into restoring a Pontiac 1000, I don't think they should be expecting that back and I don't think 2002s are at a point where every restoration dollar should be recouped.   I typed out a ton of stuff that contradicted my first statement.  I guess I'm still stuck on the "why is this car for sale?"  It hasn't been finished long at all (only a handful of miles added)  I know what it takes to do excellent quality work and I also know it takes almost as much effort to do a crap job.  I just didn't see the idea of selling unless there was tremendous upside.  Maybe there was and I just overvalued all the work I saw or tried to factor in time and opportunity cost.  Maybe the idea of having a "perfect" tii was better in theory than in reality ("It could get scratched, stolen, breathed on wrong")  I don't know.  These are questions only the seller could answer and as long as he is satisfied with the result, that's all that matters.

I know a number of people who’s passion is the process of creating a great restoration.  Once it’s done, they want to do another one.

They are not content to just sit back and own it, they just have to move on to something else.

I understand that and it makes sense.  For some it's the hunt and the process and the fact they accomplished something.  It could be why I keep buying cars that need a lot of work.  ?
