2002TI vs 1800/2000TI airbox

Recommended Posts

Are there any differences between the TI air cleaners used for 1602/2002ti and 1800/2000ti?

Im trying to fit a “2002ti” airbox to my DCOEs without much luck.  The indent on the bottom of the air cleaner won’t fit over my T51 booster without rotating it such that it doesn’t line up to the carbs and pinches the rubber boots closed.

It doesn’t seem like others are having these basic fitment issues with their air cleaners so I’m wondering if I was sold a wrong part. 🤨

first: those airboxes were not meant to be used with webers. Solexes had angled adapters fit to the intake side.

The difference between the different Airboxes is quite easy to see: Neue Klasse and 2000cs have straight inlets,
2002ti and late 1600ti have angled inlets and an indentation for Brake booster

Early 1600ti with the remote booster might have a smaller indentation like this

And the 160GT has no indentation and anlged inlets.

There is a thread https://forum.bmw-02-club.de/index.php?topic=116310.0 showing various versions.

And there are different ATE T51 - is yours definetely a BMW 2002 ti(i) type?

I have no Brake Booster in my car and use the Neue Klasse Airbox because it allows me to use straight trumpets that are looong

Boy Howdy! Thanks for the link. Some of us single language folks have a hard time doing a search on that site and I know there's loads of information to be had. Tha Alpina reproduction site in the thread is getting hit hard about now

So my airbox inlets are angled and I totally get that it might causes issues with the Weber carbs. I bought some rubber ring adapters to size up the Weber air horns to fit the rubber boots. I assumed things would fit reasonably well based on the numerous other threads I’ve seen here.

The issue is that the brake booster indent too small / positioned weirdly and the airbox won’t sit low enough. That’s why I’m  wondering if I have the wrong airbox because I’ve seen other have these issues.

I’m running a TII booster, which I assumed would be similar to the TI booster.

The "Ti" and "Tii" booster are the same as far as I know.  You have the large indent, so that should not be a problem.

The trumpets are angled on Solex 40PHH carbs for the 1600ti and 2002ti, bot not on the 1800ti, 2000ti and 2000CS

There are a lot of differences between the NK 1800ti, 2000ti canister and the one used on the 1600ti and 2002ti. In addition to the inlets being angled on the 1600ti and 2002ti canister, they also sit on a plane which is not parallel to the longitudal axis of the air canister.  Furthermore, the side covers to the canister are also different. On the 1600ti and 2002ti they are  configured so that the air intake sits high on both sides, but on the NK cars the inner cover sits high, while the outer lower cover sits low. And, last, the canister may be a little longer on the NK cars.

Due to the recent "jingoism" associated with these cars, there are a lot of people asking astronomical prices for these canisters. They lump all these carbs, manifolds and canisters into one category as if they fit all the cars. It all supposedly fits the 2002. But, it doesn't. I used to pick up the air canisters with rubber bellows at the self service salvage yards for less than $10/each. That was 20-25 years ago. In many cases the sellers don't know the specifics, but in some cases they do, but don't bother telling you. They just want to get their $500. That's what we're dealing with these days. I've been around this "Rodeo" for a long time, and some BMW vendors and specialists are also guilty of this.

That looks (too) neat on the pics. If you‘d fit angled trumpets do you think it would fit. Your build doesn’t have the ti brackets on the sidewall so you‘ll attach it to the thee bolts of the strut bearings?

Are you clearing your fuel filter? I've made angled adaptors for webers using flat plate and exhaust tubing that work well. From the picture. it looks like the manifold your using brings the carbs out kinda flat, it's hard to tell from a picture.

That's right, I am going to fab a custom bracket to the strut bearing like the Alpina cars. The Filter King protrudes approximately the same distance as the brake fluid reservoir so I believe clearance can be managed.

The angle issue I'm having is vertical and not horizontal but I might have to make custom airhorns to get everything to fit.  Also on the table is to modify the air cleaner to fit my setup, but that's a last ditch effort.

I'm using Canon manifolds and you're right that they just out flat relative to the block.  That very well might be the issue if the original BMW manifolds have an angle to them.

I wont disclose who my seller was, but my canister was a parts bin special.  I was sent pictures of a nice canister and received a very rusty example comprised of mismatched parts that needed metal work and restoration. And of course I overpaid because I thought I was getting something nice/complete. That said, it makes me feel less bad about modifying this canister if I need to.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knew the dimensions of the airbox for a 2000ti. Unfortunately, mine was scrapped by the previous owner when they swapped the Solex for Dellortos by put cage filters on instead, no trumpet, nothing...

Because a NK airbox is next to impossible to find, I am looking to make a custom setup as close to the original as possible, using original filters etc.

If anyone could take some quick measurements, that would be greatly appreciated! Alternatively, if you know of someone selling one and willing to ship to Australia, I would also be interested.

Thanks a heap.

I'd search in germany - shouldn't be too much of a problem finding one.
